Selling my boat tomorrow and need to transfer all my waypoints to my desktop (or whatever is easiest) from a Humminbird 898. I also have a Lowrance Elite 7 that I need to transfer. I have a Navionics Hotspot SD card in the 898 that I removed. The Lowrance has a port for an SD card, but I never put one in it. Does it have all the waypoints in it or are they actually in the unit itself. Want to sell the boat...not all my spots! LOL. Techno dummy reaching out! HELP ! ! !

Well solved one issue. Youtube rocks! Got two nice videos on how to save them to an SD card, but they recommend less than 8 gig sd card. Any reason why? I have an old San Disk 512 MG card. It may be 10 years old. Still viable? And...can I store both units info on one card or better to use two separate?

I would say get 2 seprate cards, and forrmat them in the unit before you download. Its real easy to currpt the files and you dont want that, ad youll loose all you spots

Agreed. I suggest only exporting the navigation data from your units to your separate cards first, then download them into your computer to make sure they saved and are stored in your computer before deleting the navigation data from the units.

You'll definitely want to use two different cards. If you haven't tried it already, when you go to export, you're asked if it's Ok to export all of the data to the card, erasing what was previously there. So, really, you can't use the same card (without first savings off its contents).

I have an 898, also, and don't think it's had a problem with cards larger than 8GB. The only time I've ran into a size problem was when I was trying to load some of my waypoints onto a friend's Lowrance unit. The Lowrance had a hard requirement that the card be less than or equal to 2GB. This was an older Lowrance, and I'd be surprised if the current ones have the same restriction.

... and you might've found the answer on YouTube, but to answer the question about where the waypoints are... they're on the unit itself, not your mapping card.
