Has anyone ever calculated how many DD bass live or can live and be supported in a given lake, I know lots of variables, margins for error. Just wondering if there has been any guru that has made any attempt to formulate a number for a lake of say 1000 acres? Ok maybe this question is too broad and specific data would have to be known. Is this even possible to calculate? No dumb questions right? Lol

A fishery can support a given amount of biomass. You cant calculate what thats made up though I don't believe other than calculating based on electro/gill fishing results which would be horrible wide margins for error. I.e. 5 2lb bass vs 1 10lb bass is still 10lbs of bass to support with forage.
So in short... Probably not really. You could calculate how many DD's you could support but not how many actually exist within the ecosystem currently.

It would have to be calculated over a period of years. It would all depend on forage and cover or structure. A lake with hydrilla can support a lot more fish per acre than a lake without cover. You would probably have to go with the lowest year percentage wise and that wouldn't be definite. Just to many variables

I've studied this general topic quite a lot. I freely admit this is a SWAG, but it comes from a fair bit of research and observation. I think about the max you could theoretically achieve on highly managed private water would be around 2-3 DD per acre. Now at certain times of the year you could have more per acre, but in terms of sustaining a population if you divide acres by DD's I think 2-3 would be about it. I also think you would never get anywhere close to these kind of numbers on a public lake. It would be much much lower.

I believe if it was 1 per acre on a public lake that would a phenomenal fishery. Real numbers might be below .5

Kurth lake in it's prime, probably early to mid 2000's had as many DD's per acre as any lake in Texas, guaranteed. The entire lake supported bass since max depth was about 25ft and the grass was in 22-23ft. Basically a 600 acre bowl of giants. It was something special

It was something special That reminds me of catouchie (spelling is wrong) over in New Orleans before the classic was there. That place was miles of grass that you couldn't get too until winter knocked it back and when they showed up to spawn it was crazy. As seen by the classic weights. To bad they killed it and it's just an empty mudhole now
