I've been from all the way up the Trinity as far as you can go and all the way to the dam looking for the best numbers of fish.

Sunday:
When I went up the trinity the water was really cold. 46 degrees. There was good current coming out of there but sonar showed almost no fish on the flats going into the river, and pretty much nothing in the river. Maybe too cold? The lake was 52 and warmer. I didn't even fish based on what I was seeing up there, and was hoping I would find the jackpot for bait. Felt like a waste of time, but with warmer water would have been on fire.

The deep water still has a ton of baitfish and other fish but it is thinning out. Looks like with surface temps getting over 50 again, fish are moving shallower and spreading out. Made a lousy drift Sunday putting drift socks in and out with inconsistent wind and never got a bite. I would have been patient waiting for the one big bite, but I had two others with me ready to catch a fish at this point.

Went to a wind blown bank with some warmer water on it and sidescan showed lots of fish. Anchored up and had fish on (double header) in less than 5 minutes. Caught a few more and I got the itch to go try another spot I had marked a large amount of fish on. Anchored there and caught a couple but it was slow.

Fired up the motor again and saw a good school of bigger fish in a shallow pocket. Caught a few more there with the last fish of the day caught by my friend's wife (26 pounds). That fish came out of the water like a porpoise cruising when it was hooked. It was entertaining.

Monday: Didn't get out until after 5 and went right to the shallow stuff. Found fish in a different area really bunched up and had great action. I was really low on bait and got 2 cut gizzard shad to catch 12 fish. 4 fish on the same head cast to the same spot, all within 15 minutes. Biggest was a 9. Nothing huge.

Bait: Hard to catch good amounts of bait shallower than 20 feet, unless they are hiding somewhere I haven't checked. My best luck has been in marinas at night, but it is really inconsistent and I'm catching 1-3 shad at time and sometimes bluegill. I'm ordering a heavy net and will be attaching a longer rope. I think if you have one that will work in the really deep water you could load up in one throw on the massive balls of bait out there...

Good luck.

Here's the 26.

Great report and awesome fish. I love that lake for catfish.. I wish I could get the deep water fishing down, but I tend to park and fish whatever close to shore spots look promising.
