i recently asked for advice and opinions on smaller profile shimano reels which led me to buy a 70 size curado for jerkbaits. i like the profile of the reel so much now im looking to replace the e5’s i use on my crankbait rods. problem is the 70 size reels only come in high speed gear ratios. so what are some OTHER shimano reels in the 5 to 6 speed gear ratios that are smaller in size and easier to palm than the e5? looking for something smaller in profile than the E series. also needs to be no older than E series.

only interested in shimano at this time.

thx in advance

Look for CU-100B’s. Parts are still available and you can find them for about $50-$70. They also made a 5:1.1 ratio called a CU-100B5. The B38 was 3:8.1 but I don’t recall if it was only in the larger 200 size or not.

Are you using a right hand retrieve reel? The Shimano Citica 100DSV was a great little reel. You can find them on ebay now and then. Have you tried any of the new Lews reels? I just bought a Team Lite Speed Spool that only weighs 5.6 ox. and is smaller than 200 series reels.

Be safe,

Look for the Curado 100D or 100 DSV. they are 6.2:1 gear ratio. they are great reels I have 5-6 of em. can find them on Ebay from time to time around 110-120. I could probably sell/trade you one of mine if your interested. They are all in great shape. PM me.

I've been using Shimano since the '70's Bantam, and on their VIP Staff since 1996. There is nothing as low a profile as the E series and the newer reels out now. Every reel company has their lowest model. These are the smallest grip/palm distance of grip, than any previously made. I have over 50-60 reels, from past years, you can measure the older ones against new, and the difference is slight on "palm size", however, the biggest difference (other than overall size and weight), is from the bottom of rod grip to top of reel, the reel seats have evolved to lessen that distance of grip. Rod blanks/reel seats have evolved to help reduce overall grip size, too.
