I recently bought a R93VS knowing the motor was pretty much done with the intent to switch motors. I have a 96 Johnson 150 debating on swapping or just rebuilding / replacing the powerhead. Pulled a compression test today left side 60 30 0 right side 100 100 102. Im not worried about being a speed demon on the lake. Just thinking having the 200 would be better on the fuel over time pushing the 198 boat. This is my first bass boat to own so any input is helpful.

My two cents worth would be to rebuild the 200HP for that size boat. Nobody ever said I wish I had less horse power. Sell the 150 for money to rebuild the Merc.

Put the plug in.

Id find a factory build in good shape and replace, unless you can do the rebuild and can do it well, and completely....

Two strokes are becoming a thing of the past. Sell the omc and re-ring the mercury and sell it as is, take your funds and buy a new 4 stroke

Agree, sell the 150 and rebuild the Merc. Going to take more than re-ringing. Money for the 150 will go quite a ways on the Merc.Too many negatives with putting the 150 on that boat. Underpowered and having to change out controls and other accessories. What gives rebuilding a bad name is guys patching motors and not fixing the problem that caused the cylinder problem.

The 150 would be a loaner from my dad but I am selling a side by side to cover the repairs. It would be nice to get enough for a 4 stroke but that wont happen. Got baby number two coming today and a house to buy as well.

Buy a heavy slow 4-stroke for a bass boat... Sounds logical.

CARB 2 strokes are the past.. The DFI 2 strokes will do everything a 4 stroke will but faster..

Just my opinion.

Try X-Treme marine in Grand Prairie... Ronnie can rebuild and breathe new life into that Merc... He rebuilt my 200 EFI several years and probably a couple hundred hours ago still running strong. He's very fair also...

Went with Hometown Marine out of Center Tx. New powerhead and a complete check of the rest of the motor should have it back next week.
