For my 10 year anniversary at work I'm getting a Orvis Battenkill III 5-7wt reel.
I'm pretty new to fly fishing, tried it years ago with a 40$ shakespeare fly combo. But going to give it another shot.
Need recommendations for a good fly rod, preferably under $100.

Do you have any idea what kind of fish you want to go after. If mostly trout or panfish I would recommend an 8 ft. 4 weight. If planning to focus more on bass or other larger and stronger fish, I would recommend an 8'6" or 9' 6 to 7 weight rod. One that would meet your price point and would offer the moderate action I recommend for a beginner would be the new Cabela's Synch rod at $99.99. Many people get pushed into a fast action rod too early in the game and find it difficult to cast. Likewise a rod that is too slow.

http://echoflyfishing.com/project/echobase/Echo Base is $89-99. Heard good things, but havent personally tried one. It listed as a Medium fast action which in my opinion are easier to cast starting out than the fast action rods. Rod comes with tube and sock and lifetime warranty. Heck of a deal sounds like to me. That cabelas synch that Larry mentioned sounds nice too. Sounds like it might be a little slower action than the Echo Base which is not a bad thing. Slow, think fiberglass noodle, Bend all the way into the rod butt. Fast, think board, only really the tip flexes in the cast. Medium fast flexes a little deeper into the rod and medium even deeper still. Since you are getting the 5-7 weight reel for free, you can go to a 5 weight if you think you will be after trout and a 7 if you are more inclined to go after Bass. The five weight lets you cast nymphs, dries, terrestrials, and small streamers for trout and others and the 7 weight will be able to cast bigger, more wind resistant patterns like deer hair poppers. I like a 5 weight for bass, too, but only for casting small to medium sized patterns. A five weight is less tiring to cast overall if matched with an appropriate sized fly. A five weight is much more common on a trout stream than a seven weight. Seven weight line isnt going to land as soft as five weight line.

The Echo base is a nice casting rod but Sierra Traiding Post has some good buys on 4, 5 and 6wt Rods right now also

My buddy has the Echo Base and it casts nicely, looks sharp, and most importantly has a lifetime warranty. He's already broken the tip twice and has sent it in with like $20 I think and got a new tip quickly.
Early on I decided that fishing would be my way of looking at the world. First it taught me to look at rivers. Lately is has been teaching me how to look at people, myself included. - Thomas McGuane

I recently purchased a 9' 5wt Fenwick Aetos. After a great deal of research I pretty much determine that this rod was a good investment at $155.00. In the 2017 Yellowstone Shootout it scored higher than many more expensive rods. The quality is very good (even has alignment dots) and has a nice medium fast action. Comes with a very nice case. I found it to be very accurate a 25 and 40". Today was my first day with the rod and I caught three very nice large mouth bass on the Perdenalis. The Echo Base (cited in earlier posts) was also one of the rods tested in the Yellowstone Shootout https://www.yellowstoneangler.com/gear-r...ston-air-sage-x

Well after a lot of research I ordered the Echo Base 9ft 7wt rod for 89$ and some Rio Mainstream Bass WF7F line.
Didn't realize fly fishing was so expensive, Some of the fly lines cost almost as much as the rod.

If you can make it over to Athens on Feb 24 for "Fly Fish Texas", we'll help you to learn how to cast it.

Thanks for the offer, But I already know the basics on casting. I tried fly fishing 8+ years ago, just gave up because I never caught anything. Still have my Old Shakespeare 8ft 5/6wt rod/reel combo. I used to be able to tap the same spot on the water and only be off about 1-2 inches. Pretty sure I'll will be able to re teach my self within a couple of hours.

crazy Rex is onto something- the event at Fly fish Texas has casting education as well as help in (catching) fishing- best of both worlds.
