Good day. I am new to Canyon lake and was looking for some advise. My home lake was Travis but moved and here we are. What time of the year and in what area of Canyon do you start to see the bluegill and sunnies start to move shallow? Do they bed in groups like I have seen before in other lakes? There is lots of hard bottom in Canyon that is why I ask. I am not sure if they have a very good population on Canyon or not. Thanks in advance.

Canyon can be a very difficult lake to fish at times. I have fished that lake a lot over the years. Sometimes I do pretty good and other times it's not so good. The times I have done good on sunfish were in the months of late May through Mid October. I had my best results fishing by structure in 15 to 20 feet of water. Stick-ups,docks,ledges,and rocks usually hold some nice fish. As for the spawn look for coves with shallow water with gravel or sand type bottom. Sunfish are nest sitters and usually spawn in bunches. I have not fished Canyon enough consistently to pin point the patterns of the fish that well. If I fish it more I would know more. The more you fish and study a water body the better the results! Good luck and looking forward to reading more of your post. thumb

I can remember the days back in the late 60's early 70's Canyon was a great bass lake. I do not target sunfish but based on past post I have read in this section,Canyon has some very nice Bluegill!

I like to bass and catfish however I am learning the lake since we moved from Dripping which my home lake was Travis. I am wanting to get my young grandson into fishing and I know that bluegill and other Sunnies are good to keep them interested. I grew up fishing the same way and I plan on passing on a passion. I would much rather have him fishing than playing video games or running the streets. For the record I grew up in SEMo. and most of the lakes here are not close to the kind of water I fished. Canyon can be super clear and it can be a tough bite. I just need to spend more time on the lake. Hey it gets me out of the honey dues for the day. It also makes it nice that I am off on Fridays so the lake is not as busy as it is with the weekend fishermen. Thanks for all the input and please keep it coming.

Gnab2...Hi...I have fished canyon 4 or 5 times over the past few years targeting bluegill/sunfish & have had some limited success. By far the best spot was around the boat slips at the military recreation area until they told me I had to keep 100 yards away unless I had a military ID. So, if you are military or ex military than head for this spot 1st.(take your ID) It is close (directly across) to the Jacobs creek ramp. I also caught a fair number up in Toms creek, but the other good areas have been around the rocks at the edge of the boat ramps. Hope this helps...Vogey

I have fished Canyon a bunch over the years. Summer and fall have been the best times for me. Fish by the boat slips and stick ups. Turkey Point and the Crain's Mill Marina are pretty good spots. Also the stick ups up river hold some nice gills. woot

Side Note: Looking forward to seeing some Canyon Lake Post! woot

Thanks for the input. Funny how so many overlook pan fish.
