I need some help. I had the oil changed on my Yamaha 250 SHO some time ago at Fun N Sun and it was time again so I decided to do it myself. Before changing the oil, I pulled the dipstick and found the oil level to be considerably higher than the "top dot" on the dipstick. The engine was level and the oil level was checked multiple times. Regardless, I proceeded with the oil change using the suction method from the dipstick. After making sure all the oil was removed, I replaced the filter and added 7.0 quarts as noted in the manual. After allowing the oil to settle into the pan, i checked the level again and it still shows high. Like 3 inches above the top dot. Any ideas or suggestions on what the issue may be?

Run the motor and let it set for 10 minutes. Trim it up some, and back to level. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it, and then check the level. Use a level resting on cavitation plate to verify level.

The reason you wanna run it is to force the oil through the system and into the the oil filter. This is a pressurized system, not a splash lubrication system.

Did you reinsert dipstick after suctoning the oil, to verify all oil was out?

Did you smell old oil for the scent of gas, fuel saturation will happen if engine is idled a lot especially newer motor as rings set.

Yes, checked the dipstick after oil was removed to verify it was empty. Motor has 175 hrs and didn't notice a strong gas smell from used oil. I'll start the engine and run it to temp to see if that helps.

Motor holds 7.1 quarts and I know yamahalube comes in 4 quarts bottles, are you sure you didn't over fill?

Yes Sir...Very sure. Bought the oil change kit with synthetic oil. Came with 8 individual quarts. Put 6.5 quarts in and checked the oil. Was about 4 inches above the top dot. Only thing that comes to mind would be not removing all the oil leading to overfilling. However, when I sucked all the oil out, I checked the dipstick three separate times and showed nothing on the dipstick. Is there a place for oil to be trapped in the engine? Prior to changing the oil, I had the engine leveled and sitting at that attitude for 24 hours.

to get all the oil out of it on a oil change or to read the correct amount the motor needs to be tilted all the way to let all the oil drain into the oil pan.

This. Run it to warm up oil, tilt for 10 min, then level motor, suck it out. Running makes the oil more viscous. Tilting helps the oil drain into crankcase. The suction method should get most of the oil out, there will be residual oil left but not enough to leave 3 inches over fill. Other than that I am out of ideas.

Keep it simple, use the drain plug if it has one.

The Reason I heard the SHO was so called "making oil" which it is not making oil is from the engine not getting up to proper operating temp which in turn would cause a type of sludge and that it would settle to the bottom of the oil sump there in turn would raise the oil level. Now days these engine are not ran a lot at higher RPM's I have pulled engine run charts on engines and they would have 150 hrs on them and have 100 hrs at idle and off idle not saying that is a bad thing. These days there is a bunch of graphing done which explains the high hours at idle. I tell customers with a SHO to run them up on the way back to the ramp at the end of the day to get the oil nice and hot to help prevent this from happening. Just my experience with them....OPTI

It's not sludge it fuel and its cause by washing past the rings and into the crank case. Its a know issue with Yamaha's and surprisingly its from not running them hard enough and too much idle time.
