I've read a great deal how we should use light line (2, 4, and 6 lb.) when fishing for crappie. I tried a 6 lb. monofilament on a 12 ft. crappie pole and continually broke fish off.
Perhaps I'm "horsing" them in too much. Raised with the attitude of "get them in quick before they come off".
Perhaps I should not use a palomar knot that I always use.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Check the pole line guides... I keep breaking off last year and found I had a broken guide that was nicking the line I have been using the same spool of 6 lb mr crappie hi vis for a few years and it holds up well, as long as there are no nicks and a re-tie after a few fish

Start using a 10# or lighter braid with a 10# test mono or fluorocarbon leader and go to slinging!

Use a high quality sensitive rod with 6-8# fluorocarbon line like Seaguar invizx and you can feel a baby shad poot on your bait.

I've had several issues with Cheap mono breaking off. I started buying the high quality ones and never broke off since. I also have drag set to feel the fight a little coz I enjoy it these days as opposed to "horsing" to land them quickly as possible. I am a fan of braid now but use mono or flouro leader using albright/alberto knot to join line and uni knot to secure jig to the line.

IMO...you certainly change your mindset when fishing lighter lines. I shoot docks with 4-pound exclusively...but I am in no hurry to get the fish to the boat. That's the beauty of it...man's struggle vs the fish on light line. A 12' rod has A LOT of power potential on a fish...regardless of line size, so yeah I'd recommend just letting the fish dictate the fight, and enjoy the ride

Also make sure your drag is set loose. If it is too tight, the fish will break you off with that light of line.

Dan, in addition to the aforementioned advice, which I agree with...you need to consider what type of cover you are fishing. Heavy cover will require heavy line, open water is good with light line.
Personally, I always take three poles (minimum). One spooled with 12/20 lb Braid; one spooled with 6/8 mono or co-polymer; and one with 2/4 lb mono....then I use the pole that the cover dictates. Personally, I prefer Braid for most structure, the 6/8 when tightlining on bottom, and the light stuff under/around bridges,or fish suspended under Shad, but that is just me. All my reels are set to a light drag..hence a 12 inch crappie will make my fishing buddys take notice, and anything over 13 will have them grabbing the net...assuming I got one in the boat (usually dont) or reaching to lip the fish in the water. Also, I use an improved clinch knot, regardless of the type line.
One more suggestion that I learned from Chris Waters while fishing on Ray Roberts.(and after I argued/disagreed with him on the subject)...when Zebra mussels are plentiful in a lake, 12lb super duper copolymer is A good choice! Anyway, hope this information helps.

Bought some 6 Pound Seaguar Invizx line and spooled it in the reel of my 12' crappie pole. Also, placed about 6' of it on my other rod (with 10 pound line) as a leader. Wow! That line is so thin and clear it was hard to see when changing the line.

If there is no problem on rod guide, just change line with the high quality one.

Wow! That line is so thin and clear it was hard to see when changing the line. Sounds line he found his new line!!!!! Actually, I use Berkley Vanish on some of my reels and like it too, but anything over 12# test gets Seaguar InvizX
