Booked a trip with Gerry Gostenik the beginning June to fish for smallmouth. Hows the fishing that time of year? I am excited as this will by my first smallmouth guided trip.

Should be good. I think May is best for the biggest fish, though. I've only went to Traverse Bay on Michigan. We went mid June and caught around 40 or so a day if I remember correctly. Biggest fish was 5lbs. Average size was 2 1/2-3lbers. Probably had a total of 8 or 10 fish over 4 lbs for the trip It was an absolute blast! www.northernadventures.comCaptain Chris Noffsinger

Now that it has been established that I have a horrible guide. Can we get back to the original question. Hows the fishing in June.

My wife and I have been 3 times to St. Clair in May/June. Whether or not you have a guide expect some of the easiest fishing of your life. First of June is great (mid May better but iffier weather). Any variation of green pumpkin tubes and 4 to 6" drop shot worms are needed. I like to have some with orange flake but not absolutely necessary. Jerkbaits can be money on windier days along with spinnerbaits. Bring lots of 1/4 oz. jigheads for tubes and #1 hooks with assorted weights for dropshot. In June expect the fish to either be on beds in 2 to 4 ft. or moving in wolfpacks in 4 to 10ft. The mile roads area is a great area to drift and find them. Also the rock ledges in front of Ford Cove usually has fish. Finally, just before the lake pours into the Detroit River is a rocky flat with a little current (it can seem barren of fish and then suddenly lights out). Are you pulling a boat up or just fishing with the guide for a day? It was a bit intimidating for us to pull our boat that far the first time but we've been doing it for the past 10 years now and will not miss spring smallmouth fishing until they put me in the old folks home!
