I have a good idea of the cost of the unit, the HDS Gen 3, but have no real idea what the difference between 'structure scan' and '3D' are and the cost to add them to my boat, a Triton 191 LTS. What is a good WAG estimate, excluding the unit, and/or including the unit. I plan to move the existing LCX28C to the bow and use the new Gen 3 on the console interfaced with the Xi5 troll motor. I think I I have to do is just mover the 28 up to the bow, mount it and plug it into the transducer in the Xi5. But, I dont know what all installing the Gen 3 entails, parts, etc..

Can anyone give a ballpark cost estimate? I am in the north Houston area.

If you go with the 3D it will add about 1K to the price. It has the 3D capability (haven't seen a lot of feedback on its usefulness), downscan, as well as greatly enhanced sidescan coverage/clarity. The standard LSS-2 transducer ($225-$250) can be connected directly to the HDS for Down/Side scan. In order to link the XI5 to the HDS, you will need a functioning NMEA-2000 network in place. You also need to consider the cost of any special mount you may need in order to mount the HDS at the console.

I see that an HDS Gen 3, 9", with 'total scan and skimmer transducer' is about 1500. I assume a couple of hundred plus some parts maybe 200 and ti get it all installed for about $2K total, and a Carbon 9 with 3d is like $2600. A tad steep for me.

You can get the HDS Gen 3, 9", with the 3D package and a traditional 2D transducer for about $1700. The Totalscan transducer does 2D, side and down scan so the skimmer transducer is not needed with it. The drawback on the Totalscan transducer is that in order to get 2d readings while on plane, the transducer needs to be mounted low on the transom where it is more susceptible to impact damage. I think a better setup for a bass style boat would be a standard 2D (traditional sonar) transducer and either the 3D package (3D module and transducer. does 3D, down and side scan)) or an LSS-2 (down and side scan only) transducer. That way the 2D can be mounted low on the transom or in the bilge to provide readings while on plane and the 3D or LSS transducer can be mounted on the step or on the jackplate for better protection since it is only used at slow speeds.
