I just picked one up for the golf course ponds around my house.I have caught a few small bass here on my 6wt but it wasn't a lot of fun. This is my first glass rod and first rod this size so if anyone has one and can offer some advice on a good line to pair with it I would appreciate it.

Also open to fly and tippet size suggestions and patterns to use. I have caught bass to 5 lbs, small cats and one gar on conventional tackle in these ponds.

Thanks in advance.

I dont have the 4 weight, but do have the 7 4/5 weight CGR. I have SA floating bonefish taper in 5 weight line on it. The line doesnt seem heavy and I like to use the line for things like woolly buggers and muddler minnows. I have other CGRs and they seem pretty adaptable to various line weights and tapers. On my 5/6 weight CGR I have a 5 weight line made by Wetfly. One time , I grabbed the wrong reel and had to use that 5 weight SA bonefish line on my 7/8 weight CGR.

Point is the rods being slow in action arent super needy about line like a fast, stiffer graphite stick might be. A little heavier, shorter head tends to be good for heavier or bulkier flies. I would lean towards that for pond duty. You dont need a long head line to make delicate presentations to spooky trout.

I small lake fish with my 4/5 CGR for those same types of fish. I like size 6-10 woolly buggers, muddler minnows, smaller poppers. If you use a heavier tippet, you can often pull a fly free from a underwater snag. The hook will bend open, but it can be bent back. Or go lighter on the tippet and just break off the fly with ease. I dont use real long leaders on the lake with my 4/5 CGR. 7 or 8 feet is enough. I tie my own and use a 30# butt of whatever and then a lighter mid section and then a lighter tippet. 30/20/15, I really go off line diameter more than pound test. But leaders and tippets are not critical in this.

As always, go try em out. Most decent fly shops will have reels spooled with a 4 or 5 for you to try out and see what you like.

That said, I just bought the 3wt in that series and I found that I preferred it with a 4. The 3 just felt too wimpy, especially in any kind of breeze.

Most of the people I know with the 3 weight CGR tend to like 3-4 weight lines on it. When I got mine, I thought it felt so soft and slow it might handle a 2 weight. I have tried it with a Cabela's Prestige DT2 and a Barrio Small Stream WF2 and was delighted to find that it does cast a 2 weight pretty well, even in close. It's also great with a WF3. I doubt that I will go any heavier. I have found some slow action rods to be every bit as picky as some of the fast graphite rods, but I have not found this to be true with the CGR's. I think just about any good WF4 should work (Scientific Anglers, Cortland, Rio, Cabela's, Orvis, etc.) Scientific Anglers has a line that most people are not familiar with, called the Heritage series. With the resurgence of fiberglass rods, SA went back to their files and resurrected some of the tapers that were developed for glass rods back in the '50's and '60's. The Heritage series sells, i believe, for about $49. Another very good line is the Barrio Small Stream line available from Scotland for about $35. Barrio provides free shipping worldwide, and I have been very happy with the lines I have purchased from him. Have fun with that CGR; a nice bass will be a lot of fun.

This line in the link is what I have on my 5/6 CGR. Its weird, but its $15. No stretch whatsoever. Thats different, but its $15. Floats high. Feels ever so slightly tacky, like paint that isnt quite dry. Casts nicely. I had a 6 weight Cabelas Prestige line on the 5/6 prior to the 5 weight Wetfly Nitrogen Xline. Ive only had the Wetfly line for a little bit, but its a lot nicer than the Cabelas line. Handles better than the cabelas line and is less prone to running line tangles. The Cabelas line wasnt much more in price.

I havent tried it on the 4/5 CGR.

Thanks folks!

My first thought was the Cortland 444 but that SA Heritage sounds very interesting. I'll go by Bayou City and see if they have it or can order it.

It's called Heritage Ultra. If your local store doesn't have it, you can order from Cabela's.

Exactly what I have on my CGR 4, and I highly recommend it. Feels perfect on that rod.
