I was watching everyone’s favorite tv personality last night, good ole Mark Zona. It was the episode where him and combs hit Rayburn in June. In describing the situation, he said the fish were just starting to show up deep and that they were running brush piles.. while rigging he said during “that” time of year, a big red worm was hard to beat anywhere down south. Can anyone elaborate on that? Best time of year? Why a red worm works? Etc.. Just curious..

Ps.. he didn’t specifically mention post spawn in his description. I just assumed it because it was June and they were deep...

I can definitely attest to a red worm being popular during the post-spawn and Summer. Colors like plum, red bug, and cherry seed are hard to beat during the hotter parts of the year. Why? I'm not sure. They just seem to like that color. If the water has a little bit of stain to it, a shade of red is hard to beat.

Red isn't red very deep in the water column

Been a few white worms floated over beds too.

We used a lot of culprit red shad worms back in the 80’s, good on falcon back then.

Thanks, Billy

True, Red turns to some shade of Brown, after about 15', a little deeper in ultra clear water w/ sunshine. Four colors hold their tint, all the way to the bottom: Black, Brown, Blue, and Green.

I spent well over a year working with Albert Collins on a big worm designed for deep brush piles and ledges. Watching the number of quality bass he was catching from April through November was crazy! Plum, Redbug, Cranapple, and Red River Special all produced for Albert on Rayburn and Toledo! There is also a cool video of Albert on our facebbok page from last September.

One time i was throwing a 6xd on a hump and dredging the bait through the mud. Every time I looked at my bait i had tiny red worms on the line tie/split ring. I tied on a 10" red worm and had some of the most violent bites that I have ever experienced bass fishing.

We do it on Fork as well. Big fish love big red worms when they move offshore. This fish came out of a pile in 23 foot of water in June.
