I bought a bunch of random jig skirting material in a garage sale a few years back. In amongst all the stuff was a tool for making skirts with rubber collars. I'm hooked now, I really enjoy making my own skirt patterns. Every year I set a few crawfish traps out on my favorite fishing holes...at different times of year...just to see what I can catch and what they look like from season to season and spot to spot. Pretty amazing little creatures! I caught this bass last fall on a skirt I made based on the craws I caught in a creek bed that runs thru a shallow cove that I fish a lot. It seems like the skirt itself gets torn up before the band gives out. Most of the bands failures seem to be from leaving a skirt on a jig for a long while. I change skirts a lot so I don't usually wire wrap them, but if you use one jig head with the same skirt it makes sense.

I only use cable zip ties for jigs and spinnerbaits. Collars are a waste of money. They deteriorate in no time and stretch, letting the skirt slide down the hook.

It never fails and the skirt blows up on you after a couple of fish.
If I can catch it, I will wire tie on really quick or use a small zip tie
Doing it when your making the skirt just keeps from having to do it later. I repaired a bunch of old spinnerbaits and jigs using the very small zip ties. Pulled tight with a pair of pliers and I don't think it is going anywhere anytime soon. I may not catch fish with them but I don't think it will be because of the ties. I went back and bought red, chartreuse, blue, and black ties to keep in my box.

Adding to what LearnedHat said: Skirt hold up fine with wire zip ties: Just be sure you add one drop of superglue to the jig lead shank to insure the skirt stays in place. The coated, floral wire trailer-holder works fine to keep trailers from sliding down. Cut the wire as needed. I use the wire for smaller jigs to hold plastics in place: Note: the white zip doesn't deter the strike - any color will do as for most skirt colors. Your trailer action can be important but not usually. I've been using one of three for years and do fine.

Good idea with the wire keeper through the zip tie. I've heard you can use most paper clips for this (stainless steel)

Paper clip in a pinch, but floral arrangement wire is softer and much easier to attach and bend the right way for the thickness of the soft plastic lure anchored. It really works and you don't have to pay extra for one premade.
