What speed do you like to drift? I prefer to stay just around 0.8 mph when drifting sideways and faster when using planers. I used to drift slower, but like to cover water when drifting and will just anchor if I find concentrated active fish. Your thoughts?

For me when water temps are cold I prefer .4 to .5, in warmer water .5 to .7 but I have had success up to 1.2 mph but thats on very windy days even with two drift socks

Not that I'm a good knowledge source but my experience mirrors Bullard's. Cold= .3-.5....warm= .5-1.0 Santee. I've played with suspend drifting with great success on these .1-.3 days. I get short struck in cool water if moving very fast. Still learning though.....

I noticed yesterday that I was drifting at twice the speed of most boats, but I was steadily catching fish so I was curious because I used to drift .3-.5 and it seems like I catch more fish now that I am covering water twice as fast.

That an interesting thought! I also wonder if you just happened to be in the fish or more active fish?
