Why does this not make sense to me?

Many spinning reels are reversible. When I use one, and I try not to have to, I use a right-handed one.

It's kind of like casting with the rod in right hand but then switching it over to your left hand so that you can reel right handed.

Thats how i do it. Once i got used to left hand spinning retrieve, going right hand felt foreign. Dont think i could ever get used to lefty baitcasters either.

Many of us older guys grew up in a time when bait casters were almost impossible for a young beginner to learn to fish with. This left something like a zebco spincast or a spinning rod to learn with. Most used the spincast to start but graduated to the spinning reel shortly afterwards. Back then it seems that the vast majority of spinning reels were a left hand retrieve. Thats what stuck with most of us "seasoned" guys.

My grandfather got me started using left handed baitcasters. I am right handed, but now it feels odd using a right handed reel. For pitching and flipping, I think it helps me keep better contact with the lure. Try it sometime, you might like it.

I am right everything but I cannot cast with my right hand which is good I think because I don't have to switch hands to retrieve. I have to switch my spinning reels over to right hand retrieve because there is just no coordination trying to retrieve left handed..

I'm right hand dominant, but can use either hand. Just always reeled right handed with a baitcaster and lefty with a spinning reel.

I never got into the handle being on the left side of a spinning reel. I'm right handed, so the handle is on the right for me. Same deal as flipping, I've never had a time where I've "missed" a fish just because I had to switch hands before setting the hook. Different strokes for different folks

I've always wondered why I use right handed baitcasters but don't use spincast reels.

I am Similar toTom...
Right hand dominant, fairly ambidextrous. However, fine motor skill at me wrist is more attuned on my left hand. That's the clarinet curse!
I reel right on baitcasters for better bait control, and hook sets. I have done it both sides with spinning gear, but am back to reeling right.

Most used the spincast to start but graduated to the spinning reel shortly afterwards. Back then it seems that the vast majority of spinning reels were a left hand retrieve. Thats what stuck with most of us "seasoned" guys. I started fishing with spinning gear in the late 1950's. Never saw anything but left handed spinning reels. On bait casters, I threw with right arm and reeled with the right hand. For the last decade or so, I've bought left handed baitcasters and put the spinning reel handle on the left side. Let's me cast with stronger arm and not have to switch hands for the rod.
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

All my spinning reels Use em left handed, and my bait casters I use right handed its the way I learned.... I found a left handed bait caster, and I use it on my jerk bait rod. It was a little strange at first, but I got use to it after a couple of trips.
