I think it is a very bad idea. How are you going to re-lube the gears and re-oil the bearings. If you want to do the job right, take it all apart yourself, if you don't know how to do that pay someone to do it for you.

Dimitri,

I started cleaning my own reels last year and I have a bunch of Curados. I found the following YouTube playlist to be very accurate as far as what was inside my reel. These helped me clean them all myself.

That's the first video in a series of them. Seeing as how the source is Shimano itself, that should let you have a good degree of confidence that they know what they're talking about.

I always assumed that if you took some time and acquired a few specialized tools, a detailed strip would not be that hard. I haven't invested anything in it yet but would hope it would be similar to detail stripping handguns (as far as complexity).

I'm replacing and cleaning spool shaft bearings but haven't gone further than that.

A few tips from my experiences...keep close tabs on small parts, have the reel schematic handy, take pictures of things BEFORE you remove them.

All good advice above. I have 7 curado'sand clean them myself. Learned how by watching the same video mentioned. I no longer need the video and can take care of all the other (Lews,Daiwa,Quantum, and a couple of bps reels) that I have. I do it every January and it's easy. If I can do it anybody can.

Im glad to see my video is helping people service there own reels. I made this video several years ago when I was with Shimano. I actually left Shimano a little over a year ago and opened up my own repair business here in Austin. If anyone needs any parts for there Shimano reels or doesnt have the time to do there own reels themselves then give me a call. Nobody knows Shimano reels better than I do and I stock just about all the major parts for Shimano baitcasting and spinning reels.

Thanks Pat. That video is just one of four parts I believe. I did spinning, baitcasting, conventional and I believe two speeds. The whole thing is for sale at Inside Sportfishing.
