No crappie for me today.

Thanks for sharing the videos guys...made reservations for end of the month for brother in law and myself to hike down to Newman Bottom and bank fish. Excited!

Hi all, has anyone heard any news regarding Newman's Bottom and it's status? I'm guessing it will be a long while before we see it open again.

Called Nails SP yesterday and was told they will open Newman to foot traffic only on the 15th. Campgrounds still closed.

OK, I would think that some of the regulars have been up the creeks chasing crappie. I am going to head up the creeks next week with my boat, weather permitting. Anyone have any reports?

Heard some whitebass and good stringers of Crappie coming in from Irwin Bridge.

Based on a long history of fishing the Yegua the first good stringers of whitebass and crappie should be coming out of the creek this coming week. But you do have to find the fish as they stage and move into and up creeks. The whitebass will move a lot all up and down the creek stopping in the deeper areas just long enough to rest and wait for conditions to change in their favor. Whitebass tend to be very time sensitive when it comes to feeding in the creek, generally they hunt from daybreak until late morning and again in the afternoon. Crappie are very different and likely to be holding in the deepest areas in good numbers until the water warms and days get longer. There are several deep holes up the Yegua that have held fish year after year and I suspect little has changed since last season. I hope to get up the creek later this month as I feel a sick day coming on...

Feel a Sick day coming on! Cough - Cough - cough - crappie - crappie. It�s getting worse.

I think I'm gonna lay low on the white bass this year. I say low, but what that means is I'm planning on waiting till the spawn gets going good in March. I messed up my right shoulder last year casting so much, so when the fish come up in the creeks hot and heavy, I'll go catch them during that time frame. Even when I go black bass fishing from my boat I'm having some issues with my right shoulder and I have to cut my time on the water short. But we will see how well my thoughts go on this for I get the white bass fever like crazy. I love this type of fishing, or should I say catching.

Today (Monday) looks to be the only good weather window this week. I am going to paddle up the Yegua from Nails ramp for some scouting. I think it's still early for the whites, so maybe the crappie will be there...Lawton

My wife and I found a little time Sunday afternoon so we drove up from San Marcos and visited the Irwin Bridge to see what we could see. We arrived around 2:30. It was about 55 degrees and sunny. We hoped to find a nice deep hole with crappie, so we walked downstream a little way. We were using shiner minnows under a bobber and free-lining. We fished downstream of the 124 bridge for a couple hours with only 1 tiny large mouth bass to show for it. Around 4:30, we decided to go upstream and fish around the 124 bridge. 5:15, my wife caught her first 9inch white bass. A few other people were there (6-7 cars) but no one else was catching. Most appeared to be using lures/Jigs. My wife missed a few strikes, and lost a couple of fish near the bank. (she forgets to set the hook) LOL. We were all watching my wife's bobber getting dragged under water and saw her missing the hook sets.

So, It wasn't too long before a few of the other people moved in near us and began casting in the area where she was getting bites. One boy eventually caught a 10 inch white. Shortly after, it began to get cold and dark. We left at 6:00. She ended up with 3 and I caught 2 undersized whites. Of course, all released. We didn't catch any crappie like we had hoped. But we left satisfied that we saw what we came to see.

The water looks nice, but is flowing slowly. A few whites are already up stream. The beginning of the spawn is approaching. Anticipation....
