Got blood work back from the Doc.

Cholesterol 273. Not sure good vs. bad but she said the good was "normal". BP for the last 30 days averaged 140/90. BMI is 28.6 so at 6'4 235 I am "overweight". Sugars were "borderline high" and she took more blood to look into that deeper.

So I have my work cut out for me. Gonna get this under control this year or else in 20 years I am going to stroke out or have a heart attack. She suggested a Mediterranean type diet so I have looked into that and it will be a big change but its something I can do and stay with... I like fish and whole grains, and wine ha ha. (In Moderation of course!)

The worst part is no more instant noodles, no more pho, no more french fires, burgers are out lol.

Wish me luck yall!

Ban all refined sugar is what the USA should be focused on. Bad stuff....killing millions.

Thanks bud!

I dont really eat "sugar". Very seldom have a Coke, no sweets in my home. Just not a fan. But Doc. informed me that noodles (ramen, pho, pasta etc.), bread, beer, (YES I KNOW!!! EVEN MY BEST FRIEND BEER!), breaks down into nothing but sugar. So even though I am not eating "sugar" my sugar levels can be high.

I am working on that already.

Cholesterol... yeah that's the red meat and the whole milk, and cheese! I love diary but its not really loving me back so have to cut way way back on that and red meat once a month max. I will save TONS on steaks!

I'm working on smaller portions, but it's a challenge. Think it's just natural instinct to eat until your full, or graze anytime there's food set out. Thankfully we're out of the holidays for a while.

Crazy how many things we think are okay have sugars in them.

Fruit....my dad is on Weight Watchers....fruit is zero points....eat till you pop type points. Well he almost made himself diabetic due to them bananas and apples. His doctor cut them out of his diet...scary. He doesn't eat cake, pasta, beer, ect.....those all cost points. It was strictly the fruit that would cause him many problems down the road. Real eye opener.

I've worked out my entire life, and also had some very hard, physical labor jobs.

Cutting out my favorite (what's deemed as junk foods) foods is/was the hardest workout I've ever attempted.

Working out for 6 hours a day, 6 days a week, would be easier then giving up hamburgers/fries/O-rings!

Addendum: One of my best friends, and Kim, my roommate, but became vegetarians within the last 3-6 months. Neither lasted...
I've thought about it, but I will not do it or say I'm doing it until I know for sure I mean it. That day hasn't come yet, but it might.
Currently, I'm craving a good burger and ring!

Addendum: Giving up "sugar" foods/snacks/candy...I may as well try to swim from Galveston to Miami Beach.

...------

Dan, youre almost exactly where I was September 2016.

Do the DASH diet. Its easy and allows you to cheat without cheating.

I made HUGE improvements with it after just 60 days. Exercise, of course, is important.

Keep us posted. Good luck!

My cholesterol was similar to yours. Started doing hard cardio 2X a week and within a year of eating clean my total cholesterol was under 150 and HDL was over 60.

I still ate red meat, cheese and other dairy including eggs every day.

Just cut out high GI carbs like, as you said, noodles, rice, bread..............and dammit your friend and mine beer.

Doc said depends on your genetics how easy it will be to reduce LDL. Cardio and low sugar worked for me. Good luck

Or, if you grew up in the 60's or 70's like I did, there's always that parental voice in the back of your head saying 'Clean that plate boy'.

Put smaller portion on the plate to start with. Less bread, carbs, and sugar. Those 2 steps will go a long way.

Best of luck with the transition! I had an in depth convo with my doc about BMI. BMI is a farce utilized by the insurance companies that applies to the "majority" and the majority has never been truly defined and continues to change and evolve. My doc said yes however we are obligated to go by that as the baseline. Fortunately he has some common sense and knows it does not apply to everyone. If you were an athlete growing up, still train some, and maintain some level of muscle (lean muscle mass) it will throw the BMI charts off. A friend is 6'2" and 252. Measured body fat is 5% (which is very low for a 50 y.o.) and the BMI charts show him as overweight/obese. Point being make the changes based on cholesterol/sugars rather than scale weight. Sugar issues are genetic as are cholesterol. Good thing is both can be controlled by food/fuel/hydration and increased activity.

I'm doing pretty well on the Mediterranean deal so far. Been having fish and veggies for dinner, whey protein shake with soy milk or yogurt for breakfast ( I found a protein powder that's very low in cholesterol, you'd be surprised how much cholesterol most of them have). I discovered even though I thought I didn't like apples they're actually not bad been having an apple here and there as a snack.

Even went to Red Robin today and was able to resist the delicious burgers and fries and just got the salmon with endless steamed broccoli!!

Working on more physical activity as well. Not that I was particularly sedentary before but obviously it wasn't doing quite enough so I stepped up my game there.

I'll get this thing under control here. I appreciate everybody's suggestions and comments and sharing their own stories it's helpful.

Big bones? Big muscles?

True, but that is not the "normal" 50 year old build.

'Athletic build' and active. Define "normal". I am 5'8" 165# with 6% body fat. According to BMI charts and my doc I 'register' as moderately overweight. Of course the nurse and my doc get a giggle out of that and we move along to the next part of the physical. Point being as we age our set point for weight increases. BMI charts do not account very well for that and the only true way to tell is to have a reputable body composition test done. In lieu of that your clothes and the general way a person feels are best gauges rather than scale weight. Unless there is +/- 10# fluctuation most general practitioners will not say a word about body weight unless the gain/loss is sudden.

One thing that helps with cholesterol levels...

Purple pigmented foods/drinks truly lower cholesterol.

Drink grape juice, and/or tart cherry juice. Beet juice will help, but I went through my "beet" phase, and as good as they are for us, I hate the flavor.

Addendum: Added bonus: tart cherry juice helps with joint aches!

Could not agree more and that's their damned problem - choices choices choices - I have been choosing a new way to eat since September. Down 28 pounds, blood sugar has improved, getting off my cholesterol meds soon and feel better than I can explain.

No question I had to cut stuff out of my diet...I went a little far with that at first but now it is totally normal for me to enjoy a meal with out any simple sugar and or for the most part carbs that do not come from vegetables.

All it takes is a choice - we all know that. I am particularly motivated to enjoy my 70's if I am lucky enough to get there. If you are 70 and fat...no way you are going to enjoy your life to the fullest IMO.

Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

Krawlin good work man!

Choices indeed right? We all have them, and we all, for the most part, know the good from bad. But do we have the will power to side with the good?

When you talk about enjoying yourself into your older age its a great goal! Do I want to be enjoying myself fishing when I am 70 or 80 or even older? Or dead at 55 or 60 from a heart attack...choice is mine.

I got to fish with Tommy Martin a few years back. He jumped from his boat over the edge to the concrete below (as we were unloading at the ramp).....I was like WOW....that is amazing. I asked how old he was...he replied 72. I realized then I need to watch myself if I want to be like Tommy when I am 72. I remember that motivation well.

They said on the news last night making the decision and having a positive attitude have a 50% better chance of weight loss. Half of the weight loss in the attitude!!

Good job!!

Last night on the news they also talked about a new study....mid age people (40-65) who never worked out....who start 5 hours of moderate workouts a week can decrease their risk of heart disease or complications by starting a regimen and reversing the conditions they acquired over 40 years. That is great news for the folks who are just joining the lifestyle!!

Good to know!

50-years-old+ and Texans and athletic build/active don't go together?

For many of us, 50+ and athletic build/active do go together.

That's why the "health" section was created.

Well its been one week and I am down to 228! 7lbs in a week!?

Been doing really well on the diet. Smoothie/fruit/protein shake for breakfast. Been having big salads with NO BS (cheese, croutons, ranch dressing etc.) for lunch. Just veggies and some Olive oil and vinegar.

Dinner has been baked fish and veggies each night. Good think I just stocked up on blue cats! ha ha. Got a freezer full. Been having an apple or pear if I get really hungry but with the amount of water I am drinking thats not common. Have not really been on the exercise much but I do get 13k+ steps a day. Take the dog on 1.5 hour long walk each day... its not grueling but hey its moving lol.

13k steps is great. The days I break 10k are very active days, mowing, ridding, or doing chores around the house. Most days I probably avg around 5-6k.

I just wish it did better counting them on the bicycle, I know I can either get 10k doing a 4 mile run, or about 30 on the bike.

I need to get back on a health diet, salads for lunch are a good start.

Have ya'll thought about a Sit/Stand desk?

I can point you in the right direction. One girl I walked past last week had her monitor stacked up high...no sit and stand. She said she didn't want the sitting option....so she wouldn't be tempted.

Pair that with a balance steppie board and you can really get some calorie burn and muscles during the work hours.

Great progress keep on keepin' on!

Don't be afraid to have a "cheat" day. You will be much more successful in the long haul. I and many I know attempt to live by the 80/20 fueling rule. 80% of the time eat clean which for most is Monday - Friday at lunch and 20% you can have what you want. In time the 20% becomes moderate and overindulgence isn't as fun anymore!

Have you looked into entering your biking manually? I think thats an option.

Strap the thing to your peddle maybe?

Problem is some folks can really screw up a Monday- Friday good pattern with a bad weekend of eating and drinking. There are studies now saying you should look at the weekly total calories instead of daily. A 12 pack of beer on a Saturday night can really set you back. Add in a couple gluttonous meals and a large blizzard and you are screwed!!

No one can run that much!

I haven't had 12 beers on a Saturday since college. Last time I tried to eat a large Blizzard I puked. I share a small now...

Point being it is a lifestyle change keeping the big picture in mind.

I'm kind of enjoying the Mediterranean diet. I'm down to 224 so definitely trending the right way!

Not counting calories or anything but down 11bs in a few weeks.

Baked fish, fruits and veggies seems to work.

Keep on keeping on! That's great progress! Good thing about that program is portions sizes are not as big a factor. Typically you get full or satisfied fairly quickly.

Be careful with eating too much fruit...it can spike your sugar. My dad almost turned diabetic due to eating so much fruit. He never eats desserts. Very rarely. Doctor found out it was all the fruit. He was using it to feel full all day...snack on fruit instead of junk.

Spent a week on the road for work. Thought I kind of blew the diet. Easy to do when traveling. I tried to be mindful but you know dinner with clients and such...

Checked the scale this AM. 222#. So lost a pound that week.

So I am down 13lbs in about a month...My belt does not fit anymore, and thats a shame bcs my pants are loose now so thats good.

Had someone at work who I dont see often come up and ask me how much weight I had lost...And I had not told her I was working on that. That was nice.

Keeping up with the "Mediterranean" diet is not too hard and seems effective! Lots of fish and veggies. Good times!

Most important thing to do with dieting is to find out what works for you.

1. Pick a diet that you can stick to for the long haul.
2. Find the diet that achieves your personal goals. What works for your best friend, may not work for you. Try this, that and the other until you get it right.

I tried 6 different diets before I started fasting/low carb. Only one of them took some weight off (basically chicken & veggies every meal). I lost 10 lbs in the first 4 weeks but the next 6 weeks, I didn't lose an ounce.

Just a quick update.

Holding strong on the diet again not doing anything tricky just using a lot of common sense.

Down to 219. So in 35 days down 16lbs.

210 is what the Doc. Suggested. But I would be really happy if I got to 200. At that point I would almost have abs again LOL.

Just plugging away... lots of baked fish, veggies, very limited "junk". No red meat. Nothing fried. No sugary dishes or snacks.

Congrats on the progress. Don't worry about the "number" your Doc presents to you. 9 out of 10 times they are going off the BMI charts which are archaic and only still in play due to insurance companies.
Your inch loss will be the best determining factor AND how you feel. Your body has a 'set point' that it functions most efficiently at and once it has been reached it will be challenging to drop below that without feeling like something is off.

Wow, you're doing great, bro. Keep it up! I gotta get back at it, myself. If you keep plugging, it's gonna help me get back into the swing of things. I lost 30lbs last year, but exercise went to a standstill with my injury and holiday eating put me back in the hole by 9lbs. Time to do this and get widdit! Keep posting, haven't been over at this site in awhile....too busy trying to stay up with the OT barf

Got my free cholesterol screening at Kroger this morning. Great results I'm down to 195 overall with a very good LDL HDL ratio.

Weight wise I'm down to 215. So 20lbs down in about 7 weeks! And a 79 point drop in overall cholesterol.

Baked salmon, fresh veggies and chicken breast has been working. Cutting out red meat and processed foods I think helped a lot as well. 15 lbs to go!

I will say this Fella's if I can do it anyone can. And you don't have to totally deprive yourself and it doesn't have to take a long time to see significant changes! With the exception of my grandfather who live to a hundred all the males in my family have pretty much died in their late fifties early sixties. I want to make sure I live to get Social Security LOL

Thanks fellas!

I'll keep you guys posted intermittently. I'm definitely going to have to start mixing in some gym action again.

So far I've really just been doing this mostly with diet and trying to make sure I get 10 to 12 thousand steps a day despite having an office type job.

If I eat anymore salmon I might grow gills. Need to start mixing in some chicken. Been craving a hamburger and fries so bad but have resisted.

Weight loss has stopped for all intents and purposes now just holding steady at 214. Thats 23 lbs down in 2.5 months. Not bad, but really need to get stricter with the chow and get in more exercise somehow because I have 14 lbs to go and losing a pound per month like I did the last 4 weeks is not the rate of progress I want to see.

If I get my stuff in gear I think I can get to goal by 5/15. Thats 1.75lbs per week. That will be tough but I think I can do it.

Been thinking about mixing in some sort of supplement to help. Like Hydroxy cut or something. Read the reviews and lots of people said it helped them. I have taken those in the past and they make me jittery so I stopped taking them. Maybe I could get used to them.

The answer here is simple. You've got to start working out. Pick a gym that's right along your way to work or buy a piece of cardio equipment to put in your house.

I'm up everyday around 4:45 am. 30 minutes of cardio followed by 15 minutes of strength training. I listen to podcasts which helps motivate me. Check out Joe Rogan, a good one to start with is his inteview with David Goggins. Follow Jocko Willink on Facebook or Instagram. He gets up at 4:30 am 365 days a year to work out. Every morning he posts a picture of his watch when he gets up. For whatever reason that motivates me.

212 this AM. Have not been doing much exercise but I am going to start like today. I still get 10-15k steps a day so I focus on walking but thats not intense enough.

Down 25 lbs in 3 month. Where I am now about ideal for my height but I really want to get to 200. I kind of have abs at 200 and thats hot!

Really weight lose has slowed way down...Only about a pound a week or less even the last month or so... gonna have to hit the gym!

Thx butch.

I'm not going to lie it's not been easy. I've had to make major changes to how I eat. My original goal was to lower my blood pressure and my cholesterol and I've achieved that. Now I really want to get these last 12 pounds off and get to my goal weight

Congrats on the continued progress. You have achieved the primary goal of improved health which is sustainable. Your body has a set point. That point in which it 'knows' what weight it needs to be functioning optimally. Plateau is natural; 1#/week is your body telling you "Great Work - we are close."
This is not rocket science but it IS physiological science. Keep on keepin' on.

210 today!

Moving right along. I have discovered that tuna steak, salmon and tofu with veggies and hot sauce make great dinners.

And salads for lunch. That's the key. No fried foods, no simple carbs, very limited red meat. Like 2x a month I have been having a portion of lean red meat otherwise pretty much fish and tofu. Some chicken but I honestly prefer fish. I am sure my mercury is through the roof but its cool I don't plan on becoming pregnant.

Thanks for the motivation fellas. Its nice seeing others hitting their goals and improving their health. And swimsuit season is just around the corner!

If I can do it, you can do it too! If youre reading this thinking "No way I could lose 27lbs in 3 months" Trust me you can! Its not easy but it can be done!

Hopefully next update I am 205. That would put me only 5 lbs from goal... 200lbs and down almost 40 overall.

I think the deal with red meat is it takes 2 days to digest.

Good job, keep up the awesome work!

You spread the desire of healthy living to one person, that person then inspires another. Next thing you know the pyramid grows to the entire population! (We can hope!)

Awesome update Dan. If you have access to venison, buffalo, or similar 'red meat' those are very lean and digest more easily.

Had my 3 months follow up with my Doctor yesterday. She gave me a high five!

She was very impressed. Down 30lbs in three months, cut my cholesterol 120 points, blood sugar is normal again and my BP is very good! Now I am on BP meds but she suggested to decrease my dosage as with my weight down I may not need that much medication anymore and perhaps can get off it all together at some point.

So we are testing that out see how that goes.

I am at 207 now and am targeting 200. Almost there. Heck when I get to 200 I might look to get down to 190. At that weight I am slim and sleek...like a sexy car ha ha.

Oh one bummer, I have to buy new clothes, the GF said they look way too baggy now and my pants will fall off without a belt.

NICE!

Buying new clothes with the money you save on meds is an awesome trade out! Congrats on the continued success!

Quick update down to 202!

Like 200 is just right there! Want to go for 190.

37lbs down 12 to go. This is almost all diet guys. I dont work out like a fiend but I am fairly active. Play softball, kayak fishing on weekends, get 12k+ steps a day.

Really need to get into the gym again but just the diet alone is working quite well. smile Almost there.

197lbs! Thats 42 pounds down.

Pushing for that 190. Getting there slowly but surely. Lately I have stopped eating after 2pm. That's how I got it jump started. Cheated on that for a few days on the camping trip but back on track now.

Like the way this is going. One thing I dont like, half my clothes dont fit right ha ha.

194 this AM!

I know that number will go back up, but was nice to see a new low.

Seems when I hit a new number, a new low, the next day or two it stays one or two lbs over that new low, then a few days later it lands on that new low and stays there till a new number shows up.

Going very well. If I can do it, anyone can do it!

Awesome! That's 45# total if I am keeping track accurately? Keep it up!

I'm not that perceptive on guys losing weight but can see the difference from our Falcon excursion to the recent Whiterock trip.

Just a quick update. Got down to 196 so about 50lbs down!

However, the last 3 weeks have been rough. Been traveling and the GF has been cooking up a dang storm. Back up to 205.

Going to have to double down again, I really want to get and stay at 200.

I got away from the keys to my success, moderate portions of fish and veggie based meals.

Thanks!

Pretty proud of what I have done. I mean 8 months ago I got on here and posted terrible cholesterol and BP numbers. High sugar, and a BMI that said I was almost obese.

So now my numbers are all normal if not good, and my BMI says I am where I need to be. Feel better and I look better, I have been told, I am still bald and ugly but hey I am thin! ha ha.

Just have to work on maintaining like you said. Making good choices and being active.

If I can do it yall, anyone can. Its not easy but it can be done.

18 Months later!! UPDATE

So 18 months ago I was 239.

Got as low as 198. Been sitting right in the 215-220 spot for 6 months. Need to get back to 210 but yea. Year and half later and I am still down 20lbs+ so I am pretty happy with that.

Now, time to renew and get back down to 200. Run number two is begun.

You got 'dis....at least you were able to lose a whole lot, so when you cheat here and there, you're still winning. Just don't allow yourself to get back to the 239. Set your threshold at no more than 220 and that's it!
