I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit recently. I saw a couple videos where Tesla Model S cars did very well on the drag strip. Tesla just announced their 18 wheeler recently. How long will it be before we see a mainstream all-electric outboard? Would the battery weight balance out with removing the fuel tank and having a lighter (i assume) motor? Would the battery tech enable the range we enjoy with gas engines? Would it make a dent in the bass fishing world or would it be a niche product for other marine applications? Discuss.

Yeah i think it will make its way into the wakeboard boats first. Price of gas has absolutely changed that sport/industry over the last 10 years. I don't know that I would trust it considering I can't keep a set of deep cycles for more than one season...

.06 percent of cars in America are electric, I think it will be awhile ( or never if the government quits subsidizing ).

You know the prices would be thru the roof. I can't see me ever getting one, especially the first ones that came out. A car is going to be driven every day. A typical boat not that much so don't see it coming for quite awhile.

The price of gas changed wakeboarding? Here I was thinking its the $140k price tags that changed it.

Sooner or later your going to see many more electric and hybrid vehicles. The US is lagging in that movement. You go to Europe and they are farther along due primarily to the need to import oil and high fuel prices. I was in Paris and they have so many more hybrids, electrics, etc. just about every Uber we took shut it self off when stopped. You see a lot of charging stations in actual use. Increasing renewable energy would be a good thing. There is a finite supply of oil. So even if 20% of vehicles could be run from a renewable source that would be huge.

Anything is possible. However bass boats are a very small part of the combustion engine segment so they would be a late target.

Interestingly in France I saw one pickup the whole time I was there. One. Never seen a boat going down a highway. Can't see how they live like that.

A great discussion . . . and any like it regarding innovative technologies that will positively affect boating/angling.

If nothing else, they are mastering the issues in Lithium so we could end up with much smaller batteries. That'd be a good thing if prices come down, too.

But, what I and others are excited about is the possibility of more reliable options in the propane-fueled outboards. Lehr came out with its propane outboards several years ago. Several of their smaller models have a receptacle for screwing in one of the 16 oz. green propane cannisters most of us are familiar with.

Instead of lugging around gasoline, for smaller HPs, you could just carry along a few of these, bigger outboards can be connected to larger propane tanks.

So, Lehr propane outboards are made in China and, based on what I have read by those who have bought and used them, they tend to be poorly made, have issues related to quality. But, the running of and burning the propane? No issue at all.

Now, Tohatsu, a Japanese brand with a pretty good reputation has entered the market. If they have designed a higher quality propane engine, these should become popular.

It'd solve so many issues related to crappy gas, clogged fuel lines, winterizing motors and more. They run very clean, too, so that is another positive.

Take a look here below.

With the technology that's available today, I don't think it's as far down the road as some think.
Weight can be reduced on the engine and with Lithium batteries who knows what kind of range you could see.

We don't have that problem here though.

We have plenty of resources and the price is affordable.

Electric cars will be gone like a tumble weed if the goobermint will stop paying for them!!

Maybe in 20 years IF they could get the battery weight down and the cost wasn’t through the roof , but like the cars that are out there today, I also ask myself, what is the cost to replace the battery ? I think gasoline will be less expensive for some time.

After thinking about it, in 20 years they probably will cost the same, the way boat prices are going.

If it was easy, everyone would do it

Interesting, if anywhere close to the car's acceleration, we'll neck braces....

It is very possible. You figure the motor is actually lighter than a current four stroke engine. However the battery would weigh double what a 60 gallon fuel tank full of fuel weighs. Personally I don't really care for it. Water and electricity do not mix and the beating that boats take in rough water would be hell on the batteries. Just my 2cents
