My son has become very interested in catching various different species of fish and wants to target chain pickerel. I have caught them in the past on caddo, Tyler and Hawkins but it was always on accident while bass fishing. I remember reading an article where they were specifically targeting pickerel with inline spinners on caddo and catching tons of them at a certain time of year. Does anyone know what time of year and techniques to use to specifically target these fish?
Thanks, Jason

This is the time of the year to go after Chain Pickerel, they love the cooler temp, Nov-March are the best time. Caddo have a good number of Chain pickerel. In pass years we have tripe just for Chain Pickerel only. You can PM us.

My dad tried to clean a 3 pounder from Caddo several years ago. It got to smelling so bad that he did not even finish cleaning it. It was a way to fishy smell.

Texas's version of Northern Pike. Fun fish, they will tear up some lures and try to rip the rod from your hands when they strike.
I've caught some in Daingerfield as well.
Don't worry about the mule, just load the cart

Used to catch these when I was stationed in VA. Can't answer for Caddo but I'm going to put my float tube on Lake Hawkins sometime this week to try and catch some. Members of the pike family, including pickerel, are really good eating but you have to use a different method to filet them to avoid all the "Y" bones. If you take members of the pike family and chunk up the meat and put it in boiling water it comes out almost exactly like lobster. As a matter of fact it is called the "poor man's lobster" in places like MN and WI.

Good tasting and about as many bones as a buffalo feesh. PIA when there's other less bony feesh around.
From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."
Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

Caught a nice Chain on fly yesterday at Hawkins. Large white deceiver pattern. First time I ever fished for these and from the bank. Also first time at Hawkins. The water is down quite a bit.

Where on Hawkins? I want to put the float tube on it if it warms up a bit.

This may be a dumb question, but here goes. The Tiger Muskie is a cross between a Muskie and Northern Pike due to the difficulty in catching plain old muskies. They seem to have lock jaw to fishing lures most of the time so this makes them more aggressive and easier to catch. I wonder if any state stocking programs have ever tried to cross a Northern pike with a pickerel? They're already aggressive enough but the size is usually too small. If they could cross these, maybe they could make a "supersized" pickerel or a warm water tolerant pike. This cross breeding is quite common--besides above example, the saugeye makes them more water tolerant too. Just a thought...
We caught a few fly fishing in northern New Mexico and really had a good time. Had a monster follow it in near the shore and that huge mouth opened on my fly scaring me to death. I felt like the police chief in Jaws after seeing that and jumped out of the water for a little bit!

I did a search on the internet and it showed up a few hits. they don't really mention any benefits except that it's a pickerel that grows bigger. Not much about water temp tolerance, aggressiveness, etc. Oh well
