Simple and cheap would probably be one of the PiranhaMAX's by Humminbird for around $100. My thoughts are that you get the most in a graph that you can afford and emphasize on screen size and quality. Most are simple and all you really have to do is turn them on and go. No special setups to make them work. Save a little and maybe go used to get more.

Couldnt say it any better then Todd did.
I would add that before you buy one you visit a store that has several in display. Remember you will see them a lot better in the store without the sun glare.

Buy used. People upgrade constantly and used are cheap as new outsourced and undercuts the old. Entry level graphs now are nicer than top of the line graphs not even 10 years ago? And the only major difference is screen size at a certain point, which for a kayak is easy. 1 until not two, don't need GPS, and even a elite 4dsi looks more like a 7 when it is basically a handheld unit for you. As close as it is on the console, a larger unit is more a hindrance to movement hogging space and extra weight to carry is always a detractor.

I just replaced a Garmin 120 Echo I've had for several years with a Lowrance Hook 3x. It's simple, easy to use, and easy to power. I also really like having a color graph. Any of these style of graphs are great for kayaks.

I really like my Raymarine.

About $300. The down scan on it is much better than my comparably priced Lowrance.

mounting the transducer was a little bit tricky but it can definitely be done.

Before deciding on any device, it is essential to consider some factors so that you can get the best fish finder.

[*]Display type [*]Functionality of the transducer [*]Portability of the device [*]How they are being rated by users

My choice is Lowrance 000-11785-001 HDS-7 GEN3 Insight Fishfinder, which is an excellent product that comes with a sophisticated functionality.
