When it comes to towing the boat, do you want it riding as flat as possible, tongue down or tongue up? My tow vehicle is a 2001 F150 4x4. Should I get an adjustable ball mount or something with just a drop?

Just take a tape measure and measure the level of the trailer with it hooked to the truck. If anything you want it slightly downhill but preferably level.

I prefer the tongue down a little with single axle. Most bass boats are light up front. Problem with too much weight in back, the trailer tends to walk side-to-side on you.

Tandem axle...level it.

I found that I had to flip the insert to get the correct level (tandem trailer) and I judged the correct level by the ride of my truck. When it was too low my truck would bounce quite a bit going down the road so I flipped the insert to raise the level. After having many different boat and truck combos I think the ride of the truck and the control of the trailer is the best way to judge each unique combo.

Level. Get an insert with different drop or you can flip it over if it's real bad. I had to buy a new insert when I went from my 2004 Silverado to my 2016 Ram. Old Silverado used a 2" drop, but the new Ram needed 3 1/2".

While adjustable can be convenient, it's not necessary. All that is required is to get the right height setting. With any ball mount you have, hook up, park the rig on a flat surface (like concrete slab), then measure trailer frame height from ground near the tongue, and again as close to the front trailer axle as feasible. The difference in those two measurements is the "error" with the current ball mount. You'll want a new ball mount that will provide the additional rise/drop as determined by the measurement.

Example: If the tongue is 2 inches lower than the front axle area of the trailer frame, you need a ball mount that provides 2 inches more rise than the one installed. Measuring this way accounts for the suspension settling of the tow vehicle when the load is on the hitch. When choosing a drop/rise for a tandem trailer, it's better to err to slightly high at the tongue than low if the needed rise/drop needed doesn't quite match what's offered in ball mounts.

Unhook trl from trk. Adjust the trl to where it is level. Measure from ground to the top of the trl. ball hook up. Now measure from the ground to the top of the ball. The ball should be at least 1"-2" higher than the trl. measurement.

If you unhook then make sure you compensate for the hitch weight.
