My great grandson, who is 7, loves to fish. I got him a good spinning rod & reel for his birthday. He uses it some, but prefers his closed face spincast more. I have not used that kind of setup for 50+ years. I want to buy him a setup that will handle a least 10# line. He will be bass fishing with his Dad this year in a Bass Club. I need help getting ideas of what is best.

A good quality Zebco will work fine for this. Keep in mind that the easier the reel is for the kid to use, the more he'll use it. A 7 year old can get frustrated quickly with open face spinning reels.

Highly recommend the zebco omega pro 02 - perfect for smaller hands - and works well with both braid and mono/floro. My son who is 5 uses one with a $20-30 ugly-stick and can cast as far as i can with most of my spinning rigs. I plan on picking up a second one this year for my daughter.
I expect him to use it for years - and will probably only ever upgrade him to a spinning or bait-caster if he specifically asks for it.

Zebco z02 will fit perfect in his hands and will last him years This^^ The Omega series are probably the finest closed face reels that can be bought today. "Robust Engineering" must have been at the top of the list when they designed these. Only downside I can think of is he will like it so well, he may not want to take the trouble and go through the frustration and learning curve of mastering a baitcaster which will one day be a hindrance if he's serious about his fishing. In the meantime, watch him have fun and catch a bunch of fish with a trouble free reel!!!

Thanks again guys, I bought a Zebco Omega Gold combo, nice MH graphite rod with fast tip. It came with 10# Cajun Red line, guess I'll get him some Trilene XL to go on it.

I raised my kids on spin cast reels....and the most important thing I can suggest is to use line conditioner like reel magic....they will help with casting and keep most tangle' at Bay.
The driving force and secret desire of every bass fisherman, is to one day be a crappie fisherman............Could it be that the good Lord just smilies and looks the other way when a fisherman tells a lie?

For fishing different species he will catch on light tackle, 10# test braid is the way to go using light lures": 1/32-1/16 oz jigheads, small plastics like the Crappie Magnet grub ( http://troutmagnet.com/). Tying on a foot of 6# test mono or fluorocarbon leader is also recommended for best lure action. Casting distance should be decent, I'm sure he'll figure it out that slow retrieves work best with small lures.
