I do both. Ive always had good luck with 3m weldwood contact cement gel. Lowes, Home Depot and Walmart carry it I believe. Apply on both the wood and carpet and then let dry separately for 10-15min before putting together. Then staple when finished... works for me at least. Good luck!

Just finished doing mine. Glue and staples no doubt. I used an outdoor glue for carpet that I got from Home Depot. Gives you plenty of work time. Not familiar with the other glue suggestion. Takes 24 hrs. for the Home Depot glue to dry before you mount them. Highly recommend using galvanized bolts and washers for the install. When I removed the old bunks the factory bolts were rusted to the point where they were about to fall off. I also tapered the end of the 2x4's at the rear so that when you drive the boat on and off the trailer the boat doesn't hit or rub the sharp edge of the 2x4 possibly cutting the carpet. I also bought a good battery screw gun to install the bolts. Drill a size smaller hole in the wood and it keeps the bolts from splitting the wood. Good luck.

I use galvanized roofing nails instead of staples.

Outdoor carpet glue, can buy at any home depot of similiar store. Do not used galvanized stapels or nails with treated wood, new chemicals in the wood will corrode it into white powder, use stainless staples.
