Ok new to this sport.looking for lakes to fish that are close to metro area.Protected areas out of the wind to enjoy, dang that south wind. I fished Benbrook till it turned cold, but looking for something else & possable groups that are active in the area. The Native is getting a little resless in the garage. Thanks

It can get windy, but find the calmest day and go to Wheeler Branch at least once. Join DFW kayak group on Facebook.

there are a few places on eagle mountain where you can put in and fish protected waters, indian creek RV park charges to fish there I think 5 bucks, there is also a public boat ramp in newark way up in the north end of the lake.

so a lot of the feeder creeks/rivers around here are great for kayak fishing - due to flooding they usually have high banks that kill a lot of the wind (though the amount varies based on direction and location). I personally have enjoyed the elm fork trinity between ray roberts and lewisville. As well as trophy club feeding into grapevine. There are some really sheltered coves in grapevine as well (north side)

Though i haven't done it the trinity below lewisville might be alright as well (though from what i've seen it doesn't have the high banks as much).

My daughter and I went kayaking on the elm fork in 30 mph winds and barely saw a ripple on the water. Tall trees and high banks blocked the winds so well.

Last Friday I spoke to a guy at the ramp in flat bottom motor boat that was waiting for his wife to bring his truck from the opposite side of the lake to load up. Too windy for him to make it back across to ramp he had started at. I only had a short paddle to protected area of Lake Palestine to a creek well below the wind that was blowing a constant 25 with gusts to 35. Didn't catch anything but dinks but found a hole way up the creek with depths to 8 feet. Lots to see as I found a spring that fed into the creek, birds that were escaping the winds, and other interesting things making the trip a lot better than just catching.

IConn4,

I drive over the bridge on the NW corner of Lake Palestine on the way into Chandler, then on to Tyler. We take this back road to Tyler sometimes instead of traveling down 31. Hmm? I see all the stumps, the old bridge, the bridge we go over, the standing timber all around. It looks like it'd be paradise for kayaks. Looks "fishy." My understanding is only those very knowledgeable regarding Lake Palestine fish the north side of the lake from bass boats . . . preferring to stay down to the south out of all the stumps. But, they claim that those who do fish the north side catch really nice sized bass.

Where do you put in? What part of the lake are your photos showing?

Looks great! Brad

I fish them all.. can barely stand to fish the same lake twice in a row. Yesterday I put in at Lake Palestine Resort and fished up Ledbetter.

The creek pics from earlier in the post was up Chimney Cove.

For Neches on Norht end of lake I put in here:

The three places above I will do in any wind conditions short of a tornado.

My preferred spots are Flat Creek and Kickapoo.

Kickapoo launch

Flat Creek launch

Flat creek is probably the best place to fish but longest paddle to best fishing and by far worst paddle in high winds.
