Our home lake Lake Livingston has just been declared by TPWD as infested with zebra mussels. My question is have you guys see any changing impact on the fisheries on your lake ? Heard a few people said they eat up all the planktons and leave the shads not enough plankton to feed on there fore starting a bad chain reactions. Less shads more starving predator fish. The good fisheries we've been having might become a memory of the past ? ? ? I heard Lake Belton is like a grave yard right now. Saw that they are on the infested list too ? Could that be as a results of zebras ? Not talking bad about Belton or any other lake. Just trying to get an idea of what will be expected of a lake that is inffested with those pesky zebras.

When we first got them in Texoma the population exploded the water cleared up and it probably did have some negative affect on the fishing but nature can usually take care of its self. Numbers of Zebra muscles has declined in Texoma, maybe we have more drum eating them but one thing is for sure all the money the state spent on buoys and signs didn't help one bit except for maybe creating more hard structure for muscles to grow on.Ha !

They have exploded here in the last year. I can echo Capt. Steve that the water is getting very clear very fast. As far as I can tell the Shad are fine. I used to keep Drum for customers, but they go back in these days.

Catfish will devour them too. Caught catfish at Ray Roberts and they were full of zebra mussels. Fishing is good at Ray Roberts. I didn't notice any negative impact beside your line gets caught especially crappie fishing on brushpiles.

I used to keep Drum for customers, but they go back in these days. Yep, it is crazy how they cleared that place up, and there are tons of Shad. As for long term effects, Im not sure how it will effect Bport.

Here's a comment from someone at another forum. May we just haven't seen the full effects yet ? It's a long term thing that takes years to mature into what that guy described below. ?
If this report is accurate, this is way worse than most people realize. Ive witnessed first hand what zebra muscles did to Lake Huron in Michigan. They filtered the water to the point we lost most of our alewives and smelt do to no plankton for them to eat. The alewives and smelt were the main forage for the steelhead, brown trout, and salmon. This resulted in a loss of most of out trophy game fish. We went from catching fat healthy salmon, to long skinny fish with large heads. Much like what you would see in an over populated farm pond of bass.
I see a potential of this affecting our abundant shad supply, thus depleting our game fishery. I hope I am wrong, and I hope this report is inaccurate.

I fish Belton, which has had zebra mussels for awhile. I cant say I have noticed any increase in water clarity. Clear water indicates less plankton, and thus less shad and thus less game fish.
I too have seen beds where it is clear the black drum have been feeding on them, but I have also not noticed any increase in black drum numbers.
I have experienced an increase in cut lines when fishing docks with mussel infestations.

Belton is just a hard lake to fish. Not a strong lake for any particular species, kind of bland.
