I have this unit and it came with a DI transducer...the XNT 9 DI transducer.

Can I simply just get the XNT 9 20 transducer? Its cheaper and only does 2d sonar. It will work right?

Call hummingbird and ask. I have a di unit and was told that I had to use the di transducer. I couldnt even use my us2 transducer on my trolling motor for 2d only

Yes it will work but you could risk damage to the Di circuit. If the possible damage to the di is not an issue then you should be fine

The unit uses 200/455 kHz for 2D sonar. The XNT 9 20 transducer is tuned to 83/200 kHz 2D sonar.

If you insist on using a 2D transducer at least use the correct one that matches the unit----
XNT 9 28 T.
