On an overcast afternoon, there were schools of fish busting all around me in 3 or 4 different spots. They would go nuts for 5 mins then suddenly stop. Then fire up fire up for a few minutes in a slightly different area, then stop. This went on for like 1.5 hours as I moved down a bank with a big flat in front of it.

I tried throwing top waters and various small crankbaits. Nothing would hit any of it. I was throwing right in the middle of the swarm several times, to no avail.

I thought about stopping to tie on a fluke or something soft plastic, but I didnt want to take the time because then they would stop.

What do you do in such a situation?

You have to experiment when they are so keyed in on the bait. Size and color matters

When that happens and I can't catch one, I tie on a chrome 1/4 oz rattletrap. That will usually get one to bite and I can determine if they are bass or sandbass

Not catching schooling fish can be very frustrating. I know. I fish Lake Bastrop and in the Summer time, the bass start schooling. A good majority of schoolie chasers use a Launcher cork and very small minnow impersonating soft plastic baits. They throwm them and retrieve the bait while keeping the bait on top of the water. A Launcher is a foam cork with a weight on the bottom. They come with differnet size weights.

I was using a yellow magic and on the crankbaits there was a white, white and green, chartreuse and black.

I suspect they were whites now after thinking about it.

That is apparently the juice in the fall as cooler temps become the norm and the bass are shad related. Just have to know where to throw it.

If you can't find em wind em.

I had the same thing happen yesterday on Fork, schoolers all around and they would not hit a shower blow, so I switched to a yellow magic and they would not hit it either. I didn't have a fluke tied on but that has worked in the past on schoolers. I caught a few on a drop shot before the school moved on.

I broke off the only a rig I had on the third cast yesterday. Don't know what (or how many), but it put up a good fight for 'bout 4 seconds. Then it won.
