How far away will a crappie go get a jig? I know it will depend on water clarity. Just trying to get an estimate. 1 inch? 1 foot? I just don't know.

I think they both cruise the area and lay in wait to ambush prey. I grew up pulling them from the golf course pond (pretty much open water) and in Caddo up against and in between the Cypress knees.

If on site, they will find the bait. I think too much cover may be worse than not enough.

Water clarity and water temp are the main factors. Clear and warm water they would probably go a few feet. Cold and murky they may only go a few inches. Too many variables to say one certain distance.

Let me answer your question like this. Many times near the end of the spawn and just before they go deep we can find them hanging out in the Hydrilla in 15' to 20' of water. Now I long line 1/32 Oz Roadrunners or Pony head jigs and go very slow, but am sure that jig never gets more than maybe 3 feet down and it will bring them up from their depth which is probably 8' t0 10' down?

They will come up and get it! Also a note usually by this time of year this lake is clear enough we can see our jig down 3' to 4'. Still I have no doubt they can see it much farther than we can so not sure how far in what water clarity, but also will have a lot to do with the colors you choose and how deep your fishing as colors loose their color at some point and some colors last farther than others. Yellow and Orange fall out first, then other follow with Blue and Violet being the colors that can be seen the most. Then you add in Florescent colors and UV colors and that changes everything to even more distance to be seen!

If active and hungry they will go just like any other predatory fish.
