My current bunks are in need of repair so I was checking my hardware to see how they were installed. Someone put a round smooth top carriage bolt in from the top of the bunk and then added a lock washer and a nut on the bottom to attach them to the trailer. They are rusted and the boards are getting soft so when I try and loosen the nut the entire bolt spins in the wood and I have no way to hold the top since it is a round flat top carriage bolt. I am hoping someone has a clever solution so I don't have to cut through 24 bolts to get my bunks off.

Break out the sawsall. Cut the bunks at the bolts, grab bolts with channel locks and loosen nuts.

Try an impact wrench and tighten. Might pull down to good wood and twist bolt off. Might try hammering a chisel in between the bunk and bracket enough to hold bolt.

Since there are 24 bolts, the plasma cutter sounds like the best idea. Anyone with a mobile plasma cutter that wants to go fishing? We just have to do some quick trailer repairs first.

Recommend securing new bunks to trailer with stainless T-Nuts, counter sunk and installed on top of bunk board. Allows installation and tightening of stainless bolt from bottom. [img] https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=1746[img/]

I put Ultimate Bunk Boards on my trailer. I drilled countersinks with a Forstner bit and used stainless hex bolts with fender washers and nylocks. Doesn't help with getting the old hardware off but makes the next job easier.
