I had forgotten what deep water fishing was until I returned to my homeland.... I went out with a buddy that's a guide out here in San Diego. We fished brush tops that were visible in 50' of water on my old home lake of San Vincente with drop shots. I had a ton of fun out here. I miss these deep clear lakes of the west. The numbers of 7-9 pound fish we caught was sickening. Then the 4-6 pound fish started schooling over 75' of water, that was a lot of fun...

But for anyone coming to San Diego and wants a great guide by all means look him up... he handles just about all the tiny lakes out here. Big water was San Vincente at 3200 acres....

I fished that lake and lived in Temecula, CA for many years. I finally moved back home to Texas just so I wouldn't have to drop shot any more (although I may have to sometimes). But I do miss the beauty of clear lakes where you can see several feet. There are some nice lakes in southern CA. But here in Texas there are so many within driving distance! I'm much happier fishing here!

The only difference between a little girls scream and a warrior's battle cry is the direction your'e running!

Plus you can fish 24 hours a day here any day of the week... Those California lakes atleast in San Diego, there's only certain days of the week and times you can fish. Plus having to buy a daily fishing permit gets old after buying the annual license.

And here you can take a dip in the lake if you get hot.

Yeah my friends can't believe I can go launch at midnight and fish all night!! When I tell people here that you get kicked off the lake at dusk they can't believe it!! But there is something about throwing a 12 inch trout swim bait and seeing a pack of 8+ lbs'ers follow it all the way to the boat!! Fished Perris, Skinner, Diamond valley all the time. Used to sneak in Lake Perris at night and fish the pump house a lot got caught once and received a trespassing ticket ($200). But don't miss enough to move back!! I remember when DVL opened and you needed a reservation to get in and had to get there a couple hours before they opened the gates or would be in line for a while!! Funny I never had line heavier than 14lb test on any bait caster and spinning reals had nothing heavier than 8lb mostly 4-6!!

I RIP LIPS!!!

Jim showed me a couple of glide baits and being able to see those things move back and forth was really cool. I could make a long cast and watch that bait just glide all over. The big fish started cruising in to check out the bait, talk about nerve racking...

When they do that just rip the bait hard and make it turn around and face them and hold on!! You have to get them to react to the bait. I've had giants come up to the bait and rub against it!! Talk about nerve racking! Another trick is to make figure 8 pattern when they get close to the boat and they'll hit it. I learned a lot from Mike Long when I lived out there! In about a month or so the trout stocking will start then it's game on especially if your on the lake when the trout truck shows up!! I've watch trout leap on shore trying to get away from the bass!!

I hear ya! Used to live in Arizona and bed fish smallies on Havasu in 25' of water. If we used a flogger we could fish 30+' and catch even bigger ones.

I know Mike Long personally, he taught me a lot years ago. That guy could tell you within ounces how big a fish is that's swimming in a lake. The man is a god when it comes to catching trophys.
