I would definitely look into Daves' (Custom Angle rods). I have three of his hot rod series and I love them. And the awesome thing is, you can have them made to the exact overall length, handle lengthy etc. The 7'11" I have is paired with the Revo winch and it will almost throw every bit of 14lb.line off. And the action and sensitivity of the hot rod series are great for cranking rods

I use the Abu winch series rods. The Veritas($99) is under your amount and the Veracity($149) is right at it. I have both and they have performed well.

I have fished a LOT of rods during the years, but finally settled on the Dobyns rods as the best. They are outside your price range on the Champions, the BEST CB rods I have found on the market. They do have a Fury rod for $110 that might work for you, but if you can get custom for that with a quality product, HARD to beat that. I still hvae 4 custom built 8' rods for deep CBing and I have all of them paired with the old greenie curado B5s. 2 are ML and 2 are MH. IN that range, if you can FIND IT at Academy, the old Ethos Cranker is a good rod, for around $70, that is if you can find it. I am throwing deep divers on the 7'6" XHF rod they have, to have an all around versatile rod, vs. all the specialty rods I have, works well, again, if YOU CAN FIND IT. Another one in your price range is the KVD Cranking Stick from Quantum, it is composite, not graphite and it works well, too. I just prefer FULL GRAPHITE. If you go with full graphite, put your drag down so a 3# bass can pull a little bit, that way you won't rip the hooks out. Wish I had better advice, but that is what I am familiar with. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Check out Lews, they have a few CB rods in several series. I personally have a TP1 Perfect Crankback Rod and love it. I throw every size up to the Strike King 10XDs with a Lews Tournament Pro (5.3) with ease. The rod is priced at $99 and surprised me that it performs as it does for that price. I've spent more than twice that for CB rods in the past just to be disappointed with their performance.

I see a 7' cranking rod in the Fury series, but to get the 8' rods you have to move up ($$) to the Champion series.

Whatever I choose I want to be able to crank in the 20' range.

How important is an 8 ft rod?

8' rods are not mandatory for throwing deep cranks, they just give you an extra 10-35' on casts and gets the bait deeper and stays deeper throughout the cast. If you are trying to get to 20' depth, I would look at the 8' CBRM Dobyns rod, unless you plan on throwing a LOT of 10XDs. The 806 CB rod is a better fit for those than the 805 rod is. Again, getting the bait out further on the casts gives you a quite a bit deeper running CB. If you long line, it doesn't matter, but if you are casting, it does matter. I would NOT go with the Fury CB rod for the 20' range, though, not enough backbone. Hope this helps.

Tight lines, keep safe and good luck. OH, the 7'6" HF Ethos rod broke as I was boat flipping a 1/2 lber the other day. Tip split and fell off, so I retired that rod after 3 years of fishing about 30 times a year. Thought you should know that.

Thanks, Thad. I will look into getting the 805cb rm

What do you suggest in terms of line? I was thinking either 10 or 12 lb flourocarbon. On the other hand, I really do like light braid like the Power Pro Super Slick 8 in 10-20 lb since it is so light and thin with no stretch. You can throw it a mile on my spinning rods. But also I know you want something with a little give to keep the treble hooks pinned. I didn't know if something like 10lb braid with a 10 lb flouro leader of about 8' would be sufficient.

Thanks for any input you have.

For line, I use 12# McCoys Mean Green, but the other lines you mentioned are just fine, too. I know several people that use braid and have no problems with it, just make sure to back off your drag a little so you do not pull the hooks out. I normally put my drag on deep cranks at about 3#s. So a 3 lber can pull a little bit. Makes it easier to control the fish, too, since you are not constantly trying to rip the hooks out, that is what works for me. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.
