I have a 2015 GMC purchase in August of that year. It has a 6.2 engine and 8 speed transmission. Almost immediately, I noticed what seemed like slack in the drive line when downshifting and again when shifting up. I mentioned it to the dealer at the first service and they blew me off by saying that it was just characteristic of the transmission.

Lately it has had a vibration that I initially thought was caused by the road. It was like running over the warning strips at the edge of the road. Yesterday, on a 200 mi trip, it was horrible on several different pavement types. This morning I took it to a tire dealership to have them look to see if the tires were the problem (37,000 miles. They told me they were badly worn on the inside edge and I needed new tires and an alignment, which I did. While there they told me it appeared that I had a driveline problem. It was no better coming home than yesterday. Horrible intermittent shudder. Sounds like many are experiencing the same thing. Any advice?

Some customers may comment on any of the following conditions:

•A shake and/or shudder during light throttle acceleration between 40 and 128 km/h (25 and 80 mph) steady state driving when transmission is not actively shifting gears.
•A shudder feeling that may be described as driving over rumble strips or rough pavement.
•Shudder feeling is evident in both Drive and M7 MY15-16 & L7 MY17 mode.

Does this describe you problem? This is a new bulletin that came out on Aug. 24th so the dealer you took it too might not have known. If you took it to them under warranty for same complaint and the bulletin will address your concern they should cover it. (if its a reputable dealer)

Basically it is an extreme transmission flush and fluid change.
Bulletin 16-NA-175.

Took it in this morning and they said I needed a new torque converter. Will have it in no later than Tues. We'll see. I was glad they decided to replace rather than go through the extreme flush. Was afraid that would fix it just long enough to get out of warranty.

Interesting...I bought a new chevy about 4 years ago. Torque converter blew up and destroyed the transmission within the first 100 miles of owning the truck. After looking on line it looks like the only way to fix the issue with the 8 speed is to replace the torque converter...hopefully before it damages the transmission.

Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

I wonder how I would know if the transmission is damaged? That is a much bigger deal than the torque converter.

It's pretty simple actually. "The fluid." This is how its been done since they came out with automatic transmissions. Doesn't matter is it has 2 speeds or 8. It is also possible for one part to fail and the rest to be just fine.

If the fluid color is very dark or black and has a burnt odor, you inspect the fluid and inside of the bottom pan for excessive metal particles or other debris. If large pieces of friction material or metal particles are found in the fluid or bottom pan, you have a problem. If there are no signs of transmission internal damage, then it should be fine.

We have a 15 Denali Yukon with same drive train. Ours did the same thing and it was
th torque converter. Dealership said it is a know problem with the 8 speed
transmission. Supposedly they fixed ours but I do worry about how much damage was done while it was messed up. Ours only had around 7000 miles on it when it started acting up and took another 2500 for them
to fix it.

i had a '15 Silverado High Country with the 6.2 and the 8 speed and experienced the same problems. Hard upshift and downshift in lower gears and shudder at speed. I never could get it fixed and ended up trading it for a '17 with the same engine and transmission. I've got 12,000 miles on it and so far it's been great. Whatever was wrong with the earlier models of the 8 speed seems to have been fixed. Good luck with the repair, it's a nightmare.

Is it a diesel?
My 2015 GMC Diesel has similar noises which I think is normal.

Torque converters have been an issue on those vehicles.

usually when torque converters are going bad u hear a whining noise that increases with engine speed. some transmissions have a " lock up" style converter, that almost acts like another gear, if the converter isnt locking up, or the pads in the converter are worn, then u can get shudder and vibration. The lock up style converters usually lock up at highway speeds, like around 55-65 mph. another thing to check is if you have a drive shaft hanger bearing. its basically a 2 piece drive shaft, with a bearing carrier block in the middle. when the bearings get worn, you get vibration, rumbling , clunks, whines, ect. you can check them easily by getting under the truck and try to move it and turn ir. it shouldnt have any slop and not turn or move up and down. just solid. the one on my nissan is sealed, so u cant grease it, once they go bad you just replace the bearing carrier. im not sure why a 2 piece drive shaft / I know they used to put them on the heavy duty farm trucks, and the old c 20 chevy trucks.

I would surely be questioning the dealer abt what upgrades or fixes if any were done to the torque converter, if nothing was improved, your going to have the same problem again. Dealerships get alot of information and service bulletins that the general public never sees.
The converter could have a cooling problem, lock up solenoid issues ect. I would dig until they tell you what is what.

I have this same year truck with the same engine and transmission combo. I’ve had issues when putting the truck in drive and reverse. On occasion I’ll put it in gear and it’s like there is a delay before the truck actually goes into gear. It sometimes is a 2 to 3 second delay. If I put my foot on the gas or take my foot off the brake when this happens the truck lunges forward or backwards. The truck is still under warranty and I plan to take it in soon. Anyone else experiencing this issue? There seems to be obvious problems with the 8 speed gm transmissions. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

These types of posts convinced me to chose a Tundra over a GM product. I would rather spend a little extra on gas than deal with repairs whether under warranty or not.

Watching my dads brand new f250 ride on a wrecker 3 times in the first year convinced both of us to stick with Chevys from now on.

For you guys with the 6.2, how do you like it towing? Been looking hard at an '18 Max Tow Pkg. Coming from a Duramax back to the gas motor and it scares me to death. Drove the '18 yesterday and that 6.2 rips, though.

There is a repair for it. You're under warranty so take it to your dealer.
