I found an amazing honey hole, and would like advice on catching the big ones.
I went there last summer and was catching 5-7" green sunfish on crappie jigs on every cast.
Last weekend, just walking the shore, you could see hundreds of 3" bluegill, and literally tens of thousands of 1" hatchlings.
They were swarming the jig, and I was catching plenty, but they were all small.
There was a lot of vegetation, which meant I was either pulling in fish or weeds.
It's part of the drainage system coming out of the airport, leading into a creek. This section is separated by two spillways about 120 yards apart. Most of it is filled with sediment, and is too shallow to fish, but there are some deeper spots, maybe up to 5ft deep.
Do you think the bigger ones are still there, and how would you go about catching them?
For the record, I'm using a light action pole with 6lb green Trilene XL.
Thanks!

If that place is shallow chances are the bigger fish are not there. Usually the bigger fish are found in the deeper water. It also seems that the bigger fish for the most part stay away from the small fish. Just my two cents.

It is likely that it went dry at some point or a heavy flood flushed everything out. Its the same thing with alot of the small creeks I fish. If we go years with sustained rainfall the deeper holes will hold water continuously and the fish will grow. Around here all the creeks used to be spring feed and hold lots of water. Stories of 1 lb. green sunfish and 2 lb. red ear were reported. Then the drought of 2011 came along and everything started over.

Totally agree on the above. Creeks and small ponds that hold lots of small fish make it harder to find the bigger ones. Look for the deepest pockets of water and also try fishing close to brush piles and grass beds. Small fish are super aggressive and usually beat the bigger fish to the bait. Keep moving until you find bigger fish.

I know that creek, There are bass and carp in there to. I like tiny curly tail grubs on a 1/32 jig head.
