So I was out fishing with the kids the other day and most of what we were catching was Rio Grande Cichlids. fun fish to catch as they snatch and grab a worm like no other fish. Since they are so prevalent these days (blame the drought for the warmer temperatures?), I was wondering if anyone eats them and if so do you do anything other than dip them in corn meal and fry them? Are they even a good fish to eat?

Thanks

We used to catch them by the 5 gal. bucket around here at New Orleans city park until the last hard freeze put a hurting on them. They taste like any other panfish... batter up and fry.

I do not eat Rios but have friends who do. They fillet them and fry them up in their favorite fish fry. Rios are good eating fish. thumb

Never ate one. Texas Parks&Wildlife say they are good table fare. You may try frying them using your favorite fish fry. As big and fat that they are I would also filet them.
