Anybody have one? Would this be enough to get me and my 8 year old son on the water? Mainly fishing Lake Granbury and Squaw Creek. I am use to fishing out of my kayak but he is really wanting to start going.

Defenently. I fish out of a 14' jon with a 6hp. I take my wife or friends with me no problem so im sure a more solid boat like that it will be a piece of cake.

The boat will be underpowered. The hull weight alone is 555 lb. Adding your weight, your child's weight, then gear you're going to be carrying, trolling motor, battery then fuel and live well full of water. Getting on plane will be very difficult if even possible. If you want something to putt around in then the 20 should be fine. I wouldn't go less than 30 but the more power the better I'd suggest the 40.

Jon boats can't handle rough water that well, especially if they are underpowered. Sure you can plan days around weather, but sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate. Or an emergency happens and you need to get back fast. I've owned 7 different jons 16ft and under over the course of 20 years. Been in bays, big lakes and rivers.

I rather have a riveted jon, they are lighter, easier to modify and require less max HP. But welded jons have their advantages as well. Good luck on your adventures fishing with your kid/kids. There isn't anything better imo.

Being underpowered was my main concern. Storage is no big deal. I normally take 6 rods and a tackle bag on my kayak and stay in coves.
I did not know there was a difference in rivited and welded boats. I am going to keep an eye out for a used one too. I am in no hurry until next year.

I'm sure this would be a little better option with the 40.

I have that exact boat with a 40 HP tiller. Not the best in rough water even with the higher HP but has good amount of room for 2 people.
