I am the gut over the Princeton FFA fund raiser tourney. I am also over the high school fishing team for Princeton. I had a boat captain ask if he could captain his sons team in this tourney and him not fish just the boys so they can see what tourney fishing is all about. I would like some feed back on this so I can tell him yes or no on this matter. I just did not want to tell him yes and then people show up and start complaining. Any feed back would be appreciated.

Our Club has done this in the past. We're a smaller organization and we trust our people who are fishing are being honest. I would make sure the gentleman knows he should stay in the drivers seat and not help the kids in any way except to drive the boat.

My son and I have been in both situations, some tournaments allow me to drive so my son and his partner can fish the tournament, and some only allow 2 in the boat so my son and i will do the tournament. Since it is a fundraiser, I would think that as long as you stated it publicly ahead of time as an option for everyone then you should be fine.

Hey guys thanks for your input on this matter. SoCal Tom you said make sure he stays in drivers seat neither one of these kids have ever run a trolling motor. I know in the high school deal we can operate the trolling motor and help the boys if they get hung up would you see a problem with that? I am just asking so I can set boundaries.

I would set the boundary at just driving the big motor if it were me. In the high school events all boats have the same opportunity to have 3 people in the boat and all have the opportunity to have the third person run the trolling motor and work the net. In your event it sounds like it is open to the public so the majority of your boats will not have the third person.

I know there are some high school tournaments that the boat captains compete against them selves only a big bass pot. I have done both, it's been some of the longest days of my life being on the lake all day and not being able to fish.
