I mainly fish lakes, but will go Inshore fishing for Reds next year as long as I have the right yak.

I currently have a Tamarack Angler, it's very stable, but very slow. If I wanted to fish salt water, I think I would give up before i was able to reach any fish.

Ultimately I want the Old Town PDL, but I'm hoping to make a small upgrade to a better yak for the next year or so, then jump to the PDL. I would like to spend less than $1000.

Any suggestions? As of now I plan to Demo a SeaGhost 130 and Cuda 12.

Jackson Kayaks has a page (see below) where it lines up all of its fishing kayaks, shows statistics and also rates them for usage. Your combo of lakes, rivers and inshore will point to several kayaks best for these waters. Going out BTB is a whole different animal, as they say, since suddenly speed becomes an issue, as does size and more.

Say! I wonder if they sell the Old Town Predator PDL without the drive? If so, you could buy the hull and riggings without the drive, then add the drive later.

It'd save you from having to make another trade later on.

I'd get a OK Trident 13.

Native Watercraft just announced their new Slayer 12 XC. It looks to be designed for multiple types of waters. Check it out below

Include a Ride 135 in your demo list. You can get them for around $1000 new. I use mine for inshore, offshore, lakes, ponds, rivers, and creeks. It's my go to kayak.

Look for a used Hobie Revolution 13. They are sleek/ fast and with the mirage drive you can cover a lot of water. You can probably find one for just a bit more than you want to spend now but the extra money will be well spent.

If I did not build my own, the obvious answer for me would be the new Hobie Compass. Previously I would have chosen the Revolution 13 but the Compass has equipment rails in front and I like to troll with rod holders in front where I can easily see them.

I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

I spent one whole year renting kayaks, looking for that one kayak that was the best choice for me. I had access to almost all the different manufactures, read everything I could online, and fished and paddled out of them. It was by far the hardest decision I have ever made. Some kayaks had features I liked better, some came in colors I liked better, some had better cockpit layouts. None had everything I wanted. The one I chose was never even in the running as it didn't have a tank well which I thought was important at the time. It wasn't in the running until I paddled it on a windy day against current and inshore chop. It cut through the water like a knife. I wanted the longest kayak I could paddle without needing a rudder.

After a year of renting and knowing the different type waters I would be fishing... lakes, inshore creeks, shallow grass flats, oyster bars, and punching through surf, all in windy spring time conditions, I chose a paddling kayak, 14 foot, narrow beam, low wind profile. I don't believe there is any water I can't make it work in.

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

I've got a sea ghost 130 and couldn't be happier with it. I've taken it down the brazos, llano, rockport, and many lakes. It's great in shallow water and has all the storage I need. I did add a milk crate with two extra rod holders and an anchor trolley. Standing up to fish is no problem at all. This kayak is a beast.

I would take a look at the viking profish 400. Its super light weight (53 lbs) stable and fast.
