Loaded up the kayak and headed too Twin Buttes. 15mph North wind, 100% cloud cover. Figured I'd try out the topwater bite. Something I don't have much confidence in. This year Dead or Alive I'll be 41 and I could count on 1 hand how many fish I have caught on Topwater. Only take 1 finger Sore lipped this one on a crankbait. Started working the north shoreline by the cage. Throwing a frog, trying too stay out of the wind. Blow up after blow after blow up. Couldn't get one hooked. Would get me hung up in the mats. Jerk the frog rite out of there mouth, or they would spit it out. Hooked a Hawg, just as I got it too the kayak I grabbed the line with my hand. Was just enough slack for her too spit the frog in my face I Quit! Paddling back too the truck too load the yak. I had too get one more cast in. caught my 2nd topwater fish.
I'd Tack That!!

Using braid? Also, what kind of frogs are you using? Seems like a few too many misses than normal. Let em eat it and set the hook good.

You need to use 50-65# test braid a stiff rod and modify the frog by bending the hooks up and out a little.

Like most things it has certain situations where it would be used best. Frogging is definitely one, your hooks just aren't getting driven home.

65lb braid and an extra heavy moderate tipped rod is the name of the game. Also, slightly bending out the hooks helps. Until you get a feel for the frog bite, count to "3mississippi"'and then cross their eyes. Your hookup ratio will greatly improve.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

i use a 7'6" heavy rod, 65lb braid, and hi speed reel with drag almost locked down. work the frog with the rod tip high, learn how to drop the tip down to the water when they hit, then immediately back up to set the hook. that gives basically a 2-3 second pause for the fish to get it in the mouth where it needs to be. working the frog is an art in itself. i still cant work the frog like my tournament partner. watch some youtube on bobby barrack and ish monroe frog fishing

Good advice here on braid. Never throw a frog on anything but 50-65# braid. It may sound like over kill but it ain't. When you start looking at rods to throw frogs on make sure it isn't stiff like a broom. It needs to have a little bit of a soft tip to help you cast. Braid has zero stretch so you don't need a super heavy action rod.
Good luck!
