Someone from the Ft. Worth Fly Fishers told me there is no Texas Expo this year. Anyone know why? I thought part of the reason for the existence of the Texas Council was for us to NOT have to go to Mountain Home for a conclave? Oh, well I guess we do have the choice to go to Montana and attend the Federation's fair.

Maybe they can schedule it on the same weekend as the Flyfish Texas, Troutfest and the brewfest on the same weekend of 2018?

I'm not directly involved in that decision, so somebody else may be able to provide more info. But, here are the basics.

Major events are expensive and require a lot of time to organize and present. And the councils do not make any money off of them. Last year's Expo in Grapevine was a very large and a very expensive event. Was it a successful event? Well, that depends on who you talk to... Personally, I had fun. The casting class opportunities were the best that have ever been offered in Texas. Multiple experienced instructors were available and multiple topics were offered, however, participation was not as strong as other events I've helped with. It sounded like other areas of the show also had mixed results.

Another issue, as you mentioned, was that there were four other major fly fishing shows planned in Texas during 2017. The Texas Council basically decided to sit out 2017 and to support the multiple smaller fly fishing events that happen across the state throughout the year instead of focusing on just one major event.

The question that we need to ask ourselves is "How many major fly fishing shows are we willing to support"? The bottomline is that if we do not attend the shows, then they will not be held again. If you want to see fly fishing events in Texas, then we need to participate in them and bring a friend. smile

rex you are right on. on all points. the expo was put on by volunteers, and volunteers only. we put on 3 shows and all were only moderately attended. our focus is to support and grow fly fishing, and we must spend our time wisely. if attendance is low and we spend a ton of time and resources, it must balance out.

our focus will be to try and support clubs now instead of big events. the brew festival was not successful either. however, fly fest in fort worth was, and we will be heavily involved in it in 2018. stay tuned for more details. also fly fish texas has changed dates, and exciting plans for that will come soon as well. there is an expo in Houston soon, if you wish to check that out?

there is an expo in the Gulf Coast Council this year if you want to check that out?

Yes participation will be the main thing,but to get participation we definitely need to get together and not have them on the same days. Because it's right in my backyard I attended fly fest in Fort Worth. If Grapevine would've been on a different weekend I might've made that do you show my face as well. I also really thought fly fast in Fort Worth was a success I'm glad to hear there will be more attention on it next year.

I wondered when an elitist would imply that if I didn't attend events 7 hours away that I wasn't doing enough to support the sport.

I attend as many of these events as I can. I have attended Texas Expo, Red River Rendezvous, Flyfish Texas, Brewfest, Troutfest, Sowbug, Octoberfische, etc. I give time and money to Reel Recovery and other organizations. Lifetime member of TU. Is that commitment enough?

The point is maybe if I wanted to drive 7 hours to an expo or show from another council, I should just join that council rather than Texas Council....which was supposed to stop me from having to go Mountain Home. Oh well, I will continue to support. Maybe FFI will tell the other councils to save the money, and if you really care about the sport, you will make the effort to go to the fair in Montana. And if you don't go, well, you didn't matter anyway. And when that doesn't grow the sport, IFF can re-brand again.

Honestly though, in a capitalist system? It's survival of the fittest isn't it? As per riograndecutt's comment ... I appreciate your candor. Maybe this is an opening to figure out how to "fix" these problems - perceived or real?
