They can be has to be removed from case but I have never had one done they say it weakens the metal and will bend easier the next time or even break so I just recommend replacing it cause when I do it I have to warranty it...OPTI

Ronnie Fretwell at Xtreme Marine is able to do it. Of course if you can just get a new gear case under warranty or something like that then do it, but sometimes for those of us with no warranty that's not in the cards for the cost of a new gear case. If it isn't bent too bad, it shouldn't be something that just bends super easily again once it is fixed.

First--If you have insurance and your policy covers "Under-Water Obstruction" turn in a claim. LU work is pretty expensive.

Second--I saw the video listed above a few years ago and caused quiet a stir on BBC. Having a mechanical background I can say with certainty I would never try that route. Bending a 1 inch solid hardened steel shaft housed inside bearings, an aluminum bearing carrier inside an aluminum housing is just asking for trouble!

Third---"DON'T" run it again until it's fixed. The wobble and load from the prop "WILL" cause additional problems.

$170 at Nettles Props in Austin. They straighten on the engine without removing.

Had the same shaft straightened 3 times on my 2001 Yamaha 225 ox66. Fourth time I bent it so bad the boat would hardly plain. I decided to have it replaced this time. One of the best mechanics in the Austin area did the replacement. He said the bearings and carriers looked great. Just needed the shaft. That was 2 years ago...and still going strong with the original 2001 bearings and races.

BTW, Nettles has been doing this for years now. They've done hundreds from what I hear.

First, make sure it is your propshaft that is causing the issue. Pull the prop and lay something close to the shaft and spin it to check propshaft run out. Props can get installed incorrectly or bent.

Yeah checked on this for you and heard it straight from the horses mouth that they can be re straightened by the right guy, and that it is absolutely worth it. I couldn't explain it like he could but something about the degree of bend is so insignificant compared to the degree of bend needed to truly weaken the shaft.

Bent Propshaft Straightening:

This is an ongoing debate, and I can assure you, it can be done.
I've been racing boats since '82 and have bent more shafts than I can count. Being neighbors with a Metallurgist at Lockheed and having access to both a Brinell and Rockwell hardness testers, I was able to determine this about prop shafts:

A: the shaft is not hardened (if so, how does a rubber seal wear a groove in the shaft?)
B: the small amount the shaft bends does not change the molecular structure around the affected area.
C: straightening does not "weaken" the metal

We've straightened literally hundreds of shafts to 0.000-0.002" (factory spec is 0.003") without ramifications.
I can spin my race prop 5730 rpm (10,200 rpm on motor) so on a stock fishing gear case @ 6000 rpm the Propshaft is spinning a mere 3200 r's....

Not know smarty but when you hammer down on the throttle a little torque is made which may "bend " the shaft ???
