Some evenings I boat nearly all the thumps and subtle feels I get, whether on brush piles or shooting docks. Other times I most definitely don't. I figure over the past year, my overall miss rate must be 30+%.

Not a huge deal, because the freezer's always full to give people fresh filets, and I fish as much because I love being out there as anything, but I'm just wondering if others miss as many as I do. I tend to miss more when they take it on the drop than I should, more in the wind than I should, and definitely more when I go straight vertical.

Do you use mono or braid? I found braid really improved my bite detection and hookup. Sometimes, fish just miss it, or hit it, but not eat it.

Sometimes a color change can make all the difference in the world.

I know during the summer there are tons of little fish biting and that can affect hookups. I also think during this time of year they are just not as aggressive as say the spring or winter.

It seems if it is a hard bite I miss more. If it is just a little weight I catch those more often. I am guessing the hard bite are smaller fish hitting and running to get away from the larger fish. They extra weight are larger fish that dont have to scurry away as fast. Just an opinion

Miss rate from all year avg is close to 10%. Miss rate is higher in the summer for me, it's easier to get on the keepers and stay away from the dinks in the winter so it changes...

You're looking at it all wrong. The fish are missing your jig, you're not missing them smile

I generally have more misses this time of year than I do in the spring and fall. That being said, I also see it vary from day to day, and pile to pile. For example, if we get a weird pressure system come through, the fish might slap at it as opposed to engulfing it.

I also see a lot more short strikes if the feeding periods are heavier during the morning/evening times. The mid day bite may be a little slower as the fish really aren't actively eating, and are striking simply out of reaction to a jig being in their face.

Lane is spot on. I noticed yesterday that I was missing a lot of bites but I don't really pay much attention to it. Sometimes the fish just aren't in an aggressive mood and they will mess with the jig out of curiosity. I have noticed (maybe others have seen the same thing) that black crappie in particular tend to give you more missed bites that whites. Sometimes on lakes with blacks, I get a ton of bites that feel like perch and I set the hook and its a nice black. Whites will do that too but they seem to not be as bad as blacks are about short striking and messing with the jig. Crappie are weird and frustrating at times, which is why I love fishing for them.
