I am looking for some really good fly tying recipes for Salmon and Chum. We're headed to Unalakleet, Alaska, and our target species are Cohos, Chum, Grayling, and Dolly Vardens. Regarding the Salmon flies, I'm not talking about ones like Dutch's masterpieces that would personally kill me to tye on my line; I'm talking about flies that the fish will destroy and I won't be crying about it.

I don't tie my Alaska flies...but can recommend a few that you shouldn't go without. You can find recipes on y-tube and/or online for all of them.

The Intruder is excellent. It is a King getter and needs to be large and preferably articulated for best effectiveness.

My personal favorite is the egg sucking leech. I definitely would not go to Alaska without a good selection of these. They will get Kings, Silvers, Steelhead.

Its getting very late for Kings but the Silvers should be cranking up soon. When the silvers are hot, you can get them on top with gurglers...pink being my preferred color.

Egg patterns/beads will take dollies all day as well as any native rainbows from now to freeze up.

Grayling are a great fish, great. They will hit elk hair caddis and Adams with abandon, if properly presented.

We are returning to Unalakleet, and there was a cancellation within our group. If you seriously are interested, contact David Leake at Tailwaters Fly Fishing. It is not an official hosted Tailwaters trip like it was in 2010, but it is a return trip for guests who were on the 2010 hosted trip. It is NOT a fly out lodge, but it offers some great fishing. Almost every day of the 2010 trip, it was a four-species day. Rainbows are not present, but we did catch many Cohos that still had lice. Unalakleet is about 150 miles SE of Nome, and the river empties into the Norton Sound.
