Is there a detent adjustment? Mine just does not go in and out of gear right. I also think the throttle friction is a little too much. New to CCs after owning bass boats forever. On my Ranger I always kept my hand on the throttle lever and did not want a lot of friction.

From what I read not being able to easily find neutral is a common complaint with Mercury top mount controls. Some have even swapped out for different brand. On one forum someone said that only adjustment is at the motor. I am thinking that maybe he does not refer to throttle friction and detent on the control box as adjustments.

Some mercury binnacle controls do not have a detent. I believe there is a friction adjustment inside it. Some other brands don't have any detent. They rely on friction to hold in place. On my older cc boat the binnacle control gradually got tighter for a while. It loosened when I took both cable ends off and laid the motor end on the floor. On shifter end remove rubber boot and slowly pour mystic air tool oil between the cable and sleeve and work it in and out a lot. Continue to add oil occasionally until the cable slides freely. Old nasty will run out the other end so place a rag under it. Most people don't want it to move easily. The throttle will vibrate back and slow the motor down if you don't hold it. I usually rest my hand on my shifter now since I broke a steering cable at wot. Luckily I grabbed it and pulled into neutral as I was thrown against the port gunwale. Buddy landed on top of me. He said I like you but don't want to cuddle.

Can't speak Mercury but Yamaha has little too none.
