Thinking about getting a Jeep. If you drive one, do you load your kayak on top, or use a trailer?

Back in my broke college days in San Marcos, we'd load a 16' canoe on my Wrangler with no rack. I'd drop the top (never was up anyway) and we'd lay the boat, on gunwale pads, across the roll bar and windshield. Once it was tied down, it wasn't going anywhere. Solid as a rock.

Of course a rack is far less ghetto, but you do what you gotta do sometimes.

I have a wrangler. I cut a pool noodle in half and put the yak on top. I have a cheap mopar light bar I attach to in front with a ratchet strap and use the spare tire in back.

I have traveled on the highway at 70 with no problems. My kayak is only 11 feet, might run into probs with a longer one.

Lesson I learned. do not over tighten, my pal's yak was a cheapo and he bent it.
