Anybody want to chase some gar on Lewisville in August?? Looking for someone with a little experience to teach me some new tricks! I would post in the rough fish section but I'd rather fish with a fellow catfisherman.. We can take my rig. texas

Maybe if you posted this in the rough fish forum you would get more responses. There really ain't no difference between fishermen.

Catching gar was easy for me. Live 4" perch fished underneath a float for drifting, or fished off the bottom if anchored. The area around Oak Point was covered with them when I lived there.

I never tried the frayed rope method, but others have said it was a fun way to catch gar as well.

Sorry El, only time I've ever caught them is in my cast net. I'm not to knowledgeable but I would definitely use a steel leader.

fished Oak point Sunday and they were pretty active right in between the 2 boat ramps (shady shores and Oak point). saw some 4 and 5 footers.

I'll go but It will have to be later August due to a Colorado trip. I'm not an old pro but I have targeted them and done fairly well in the past. They aren't the easiest fish to hook up with.

Hit the creeks & under a tree. I use a float....like a crappie rig w/large minnows. Count 90 seconds after bobber disappeares. I promise it works. Trinity has some bigguns!

I would definitely be down for it. Shoot me a pm. It'll be good practice for the shark fishing I'll be doing in SC next month.

You have plenty of experience to go after them gato. Cut fresh shad, carp, or small live perch under a cork or on bottom in a likely area. Count to at least 10 before reeling down.

I like smaller circles for gar, 5 or 6/0 but I've caught lots on 8's too. You'll lose more with circles vs letting them swallow treble hooks, but I figure if I don't want a big cat swallowing the hook, I owe gar the same respect.
