Can anyone give me suggestions on lures for the top-water bite?

tiny torpedos - clear or silver. I have also caught them on small zara spooks. Most schoolies are focusing on smaller baits right now, so if you are throwing a huge top water, you are less likely to get bit. Matching the hatch is somewhat important even when targeting ferociously feeding fish.

I like a Heddon Popr or similar. Of course when the bait is small it is hard to beat a "Sandie Dandie" or a popping cork with 2 jigs.

We called "Sandie Dandie" a Golly Whopper growing up.. best Sandbass lure IMO when they are on top. Coming in second would be a Hellbender trolling combo casted out. I almost never reel it in empty casting around schools.. You can chunk that Hellbender with the hellpet far!

Pop-R,by REBEL, is good. If you can find them, Near Nuthin, by Cotton Cordell is another of my favorites. The Near Nuthin is weighted in the rear, so you can cast it a mile. A quick, pumping retrieve makes it look like fleeing bait! Here is a link for image purposes only:

If they are feeding on top, most of the time they will hit a Humdinger.

That's funny! I bought a half dozen or so about 10 years ago when I came across a lot of them.
The upper right has caught its share!

Another good one is a slab or Little George. Let the sink a little to get below the dinks and jig back to boat horizontally. I have also caught cats this way but closer to the bottom.

Try ripping a 3/8 ounce chrome CC spoon on top with a fast retrieve, its a game changer

Clear Heddon Baby Torpedo. Take front hooks off and flatten barbs on rear hooks. Makes it much simpler to get them unhooked. Find surfacing schools and retrieve rapidly.
