37 years and 5 months ago, this fish changed my life... It sparked a passion for this sport like no other for me... After I married my wife 2001, I find out, this man is her uncle, If that don't beat all.. Fortunately, for me, I've had the pleasure of visiting with Jimmy many times before he passed away.. I got to hold the mount of the fish that gave me such purpose way back when... Thought I'd share this old newspaper clipping I have from My wife's mom, Bobbie.
It's been 37 year since the catch, and it broke a 37 year long record, his record has been broken many times, but still, a nice piece of bass fishing history that endures..

I certainly remember that. I worked at Monticello's sister plant, Martin Lake. We all headed to Mount Pleasant! Almost beat that little lake to death. Lake Fork opened up a few years later, and took the pressure off.

I was about to graduate from Moore High School near OKC and had already been following what was going on at Monti. I had spent the previous five summer vacations with my family in San Diego. Every day my dad would get up early and drop me off at daylight at Lake Miramar, Otay or San Vicente and I would spend the day chasing those giants. I never caught a monster out there but it was a great education.

I had always planned on living in Cali but Monti brought me to Texas. So glad that I stayed.

I recall it well. I had the privilege to sit in my boat next to Jimmy where the creek crossed the pipeline at Monty about a month after he caught that fish and hear the story first hand. He was in his boat and I was in mine. What a nice gentleman.

I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I get an allowance every month. I have PU truck and a bass boat, I am blessed.

RedSkeeter - Remember those winters back in those days on Monticello. Long lines to get on the lake and you could almost walk across that lake from boat to boat there were so many but it seemed to be the first I remember where catching giant bass really took off.

Another couple memories from Monticello. Max Roach was fixture out there and caught a ton of big fish. There was also a guide named Tommy Milam who caught his share of giants on DD crankbaits.

Isn't he the one that had that famous mount of a bunch of big fish on it that we would see at different boat and tackle shows.
