What off the beaten path places would you suggest to eat in or around Gelveston?

I'd second DayOne's Shrimp and Stuff as one of the best for fried shrimp and some of the best fried catfish . . . anywhere. And, it is truly "off the beaten path" as it is located back on O Street and 30th or some address close to that. You can find it easily.
Anyway, prices are lower, the portions are large and they know how to fry fish.
Not that anyone goes to Galveston in the heat to eat Greek food, but Olympia Grill on Seawall Blvd. has an eclectic menu and I have always liked eating there.
Yamato for oriental (Vietnamese I think) food is good on 61st. Pho 20 another of this type.
I like Salsa's for Nexican Food. One large platter of fully dressed Nachos will feed two if budget-minded. But, we don't eat much Mexican food if it is really hot weather and summertime.
More: Guido's, as mentioned, is an institution on the island, Landry's is great, and they have a Saltgrass that is really good anywhere you find one with a very broad menu to cover a big group with different tastes.

+1 on the Old Mexican Caf. Best shrimp cocktail in Galveston in my opinion. Bennos for some great food especially grilled shrimp and fish. Cajun rice and beans are great. Last time we were in Galveston first of June we ate here 3 times. Gumbo Diner for breakfast and beignets. Millers Restaurant.

Willie G's has some of the finest gourmet food . It's pretty fancy but I have gone in with beach attire on . Prices are reasonable for what you get and it blows Guido's or landry's away . It is however owned by the landry's Corp. but what doesn't Tillman own ?

I have been pretty disappointed in Guidos the last several years. The food has been very mediocre during my "recent" visits.

Benno's -- best blue crabs (esp ones with garlic) on the planet. As far as I know they get them locally, never frozen. Seasonal (i.e. they won't have them in winter).
